Before You Apply as a Virtual Assistant, Ask Yourself These 10 Questions

Being a VA isn’t just about knowing Canva, Google Workspace, or how to send an email.

Before applying for a remote role, you should be able to answer these:

1. What specific skill can I offer a client today?
Not “I’m willing to learn.” What can you already do well enough that a business would pay you for it?

2. What problem can I solve for a business?
Clients don’t hire because you need a job. They hire because they need something done.

3. Can I work independently without someone constantly checking on me?
Remote work requires ownership. You won’t always have someone beside you telling you what to do next.

4. When I don’t know how to do something, what do I do first?
Do you immediately ask your client, or do you research, investigate, and try to find a solution first?

5. Can I communicate professionally in writing and on calls?
You don’t need perfect English. But you need to communicate clearly, understand instructions, ask good questions, and give proper updates.

6. Can I manage deadlines without being constantly reminded?
A good VA doesn’t disappear until the deadline. They communicate progress, flag problems early, and deliver when they say they will.

7. How do I respond when I make a mistake?
Do you make excuses, hide it, or take accountability and come back with a solution?

8. Can a client trust me with their business?
You may have access to their CRM, emails, customer information, documents, systems, and sometimes confidential information. Trust is a huge part of remote work.

9. What results can I show from my previous experience?
Don’t just say, “I managed social media.” Tell them what you improved, accomplished, organized, generated, saved, or helped build.

10. Why should a client choose me over hundreds of other applicants?
This is probably the most important question.

If your only answer is “because I’m hardworking and willing to learn,” you still have some work to do.

There are thousands of hardworking applicants.

The people who stand out can clearly say:

This is what I’m good at.
This is the problem I can solve.
This is the value I can bring to your business.

That’s the mindset shift from looking for a VA job to becoming a remote professional businesses actually want to hire.

“Are you a VA?” (Long post ahead - para matubag inyong pangutana) 🤗

YES. ❤️

I started as a Virtual Assistant in 2017.

And before I became a Managing Partner of a staffing agency, before I started helping companies build their own remote teams, I was the person on the other side applying for jobs and looking for clients.

I started at around $1.50/hour.

Then little by little, my rate increased.

$8/hour.
$10/hour.
$12.50/hour.

Eventually, I reached $45/hour for some of my work.

And there was also a point when I wasn’t working for just one client.

I had multiple contracts at the same time. One client would refer me to another. Sometimes even a client would ask me to help their spouse’s business because they liked my work. 🥹

The screenshots I’m sharing are real pieces of that journey.

Some are old contracts. Some are messages from clients. Some are payments I received.

And these were before I became a Managing Partner.

I share them not to say, “Look how much I earned.”

I share them because I know there are VAs following me right now who are still at the beginning.

Maybe you’re earning $2 or $3/hour.

Maybe you’ve been applying for months and still haven’t landed your first client.

Maybe you’re looking at other successful VAs and wondering:

“Maabot ba pud kaha ko dira?”

YES. But don’t expect it to happen overnight.

When I started in 2017, I didn’t know this journey would eventually lead me here.

I just kept learning.

I became better at what I did.

I learned how to communicate with clients.

I learned sales, marketing, lead generation, operations, real estate, and eventually how businesses actually work.

And as my skills and experience increased, so did my value.

Then the journey changed again.

From being the VA looking for opportunities…

to becoming a Managing Partner helping create those opportunities for other Filipinos. 🥹❤️

That part still feels surreal sometimes.

Because I know exactly what it feels like to wait for someone to give you a chance.

So when clients tell me,

“You’re helping your fellow Filipinos have better opportunities.”

My answer will always be:

YES. That’s part of the reason I do this.

Being a VA was never something I needed to “graduate” from or hide.

Being a VA was the door that changed my life.

And I’m proud of where I started.

So if you’re still in your $1.50/hour chapter, don’t compare it to somebody else’s Chapter 20.

Learn. Build your skills. Protect your reputation. Take care of good clients. And keep going.

You have no idea where one opportunity can eventually take you.

2017: Virtual Assistant.
Today: Managing Partner.

Same person.

Just years of experience, failures, opportunities, relationships, and a lot of faith in between. 🙏🏻❤️

Onwards and upwards.

There was a time nga ultimo ₱200, lisod pa mi makahulam sa silingan. (Long post ahead, salamat sa pagbasa) 🤗

And that season of my life taught me something nga hangtod karon dala-dala gihapon nako.

In 2017, I started my work-from-home journey.

I started earning around $1.50 per hour.

I didn’t have everything figured out. I just knew nga kinahanglan ko maningkamot because I wanted a different life for my family.

From $1.50/hour, eventually I worked my way up to $45/hour.

But somewhere along the way, I realized something bigger.

Dili lang diay akong kaugalingon ug akong pamilya ang pwede nako matabangan.

Some of our clients would tell me:

“You’re also helping your fellow Filipinos build a better life.”

And I proudly say YES.

Because that has become one of my biggest goals.

To create opportunities for other Filipinos to earn better without having to leave their families. To show them that there are opportunities beyond what they thought was possible. And hopefully, to give someone else the same chance that changed my life.

One time, akong manghud niingon sa akoa:

“Daghan na pud diay ka’g natabangan, Te, ba?”

Nakahuna-huna ko…

Oo bitaw, no?

And then I started wondering where some of the people we’ve helped over the years are now. I hope they’re doing well. I hope some of them are also helping someone else today.

Looking at where we came from, I’m just grateful.

From struggling to borrow ₱200…

to being in a position where I can create opportunities for others.

Not because the journey was easy. But because we kept going.

I truly believe faith works when you believe, but you also have to do the work.

Naa jud gilaan si Lord para sa atoa. Sometimes you just don’t see it yet because you’re still in the chapter where you’re being prepared for it.

So kung naa ka karon sa panahon nga murag lisod kaayo ang tanan…

Padayon lang.

Your ₱200 story today might become the story you tell someday about how everything started.

Onwards and upwards. 🙏🏻❤️

Kakasweldo mo lang, so nag-steak ka. 🥩🍷

STEAK NOW. TURO-TURO LATER. 😭😂

Deserve man nato i-reward atong kaugalingon after magtrabaho ug taman, diba? HAHAHA.

Day 1 after sweldo:
🥩 Steak
🍷 Wine
✨ “I deserve this.”

Few days later:
🍢 Turo-turo
🍳 Itlog
🍜 Pancit Canton
💸 “Kanus-a gani sunod sweldo?”

Ang importante, nakatilaw ta ug steak. 😂

Mga VA ug WFH dira, unsay inyong “kakasweldo ko” meal nga mahimong “tipid mode” after pila ka days? 😂👇

We just hit our 10th hire for ONE client at Team Outsource! 🎉

And the exciting part? They’re still adding more.

We started working with this client only 3 months ago, initially helping them explore how remote staffing could support their growing business.

Fast forward to today, and they’ve hired 10 remote professionals through Team Outsource across multiple functions.

Some of the roles they’ve hired include:

✔️ Estimators
✔️ Technical Designer
✔️ Product Engineer
✔️ Marketing Coordinator
✔️ Graphic Designer
✔️ Operations Assistant
✔️ Project Coordinators

I love milestones like this because it shows that remote staffing isn’t limited to the typical “VA” or administrative roles anymore.

Companies are building entire teams with specialized remote professionals.

And for us, the biggest compliment is when a client hires one person, sees the value, comes back for another, and then keeps expanding.

From our first hire to 10 hires in just 3 months. And we’re not done yet! 🥂

Congratulations to our Team Outsource team behind the scenes who keeps finding great people and making these partnerships work. 💙

Having good people around you is really hard to find nowadays, especially people you can genuinely trust and rely on as the business grows.

So today, I want to give a special shoutout to Melanie (I can't tag her lol). ❤️

I’ve known her long enough to know how patient, personable, and dependable she is. As Team Outsource has grown, she has grown with us too. From leading recruitment to helping with operations, client calls, follow-ups, and handling concerns from both clients and our VAs and contractors.

She’s one of those people you know you can count on when things get busy or challenging.

Melanie, thank you for always stepping up and for everything you do for Team Outsource. You are appreciated! 💙

Good people are hard to find. When you find them, recognize them and make sure they know their value.

PS: This is my personal shoutout. Hindi pwedeng VAs lang ang may recognition. Let’s also recognize the internal team that keeps everything together behind the scenes! 👏

Good job, Marvin! 🥳
