Attas – Gothic: “Father”

Attas is the Gothic word for “father.” It comes from Gothic, an East Germanic language once spoken by the Goths, a people who played a significant role in European history during the late Roman Empire.

More than just a word for a parent, attas represented the head of a family—the one who protected, guided, and cared for his household. Around campfires and in wooden halls, children would have called out “Attas” to seek comfort, advice, or protection.

The Gothic language flourished between the 3rd and 6th centuries. One of its greatest legacies is the Gothic Bible, translated by the bishop Ulfilas (Wulfila) in the 4th century. This translation preserved many Gothic words, including attas, long after the language itself faded from everyday use.

As the Gothic kingdoms disappeared and their people gradually adopted other languages such as Latin and early forms of Spanish, Italian, and other European tongues, Gothic slowly vanished. By the Middle Ages, few people could still speak it, and words like attas survived only in ancient manuscripts.

Today, attas stands as a quiet reminder of a language that once echoed across Europe. Though no child speaks this word to their father in daily life anymore, it remains preserved in history, allowing us to hear the voice of a civilization that has long since passed.
