Never too late to start!

It’s a staple item many people grew up with during their childhood. Some even have them as adults. Piggy banks are one of the first ways a child learns to start saving money through the allowance or spare change they receive from their parents.

While the modern concept of the piggy bank was popularized during the early 20th century, its history dates back as early as the 2nd century BC. During those times, people would keep their money in simple jars made of clay.

But the origins of the pig-shaped piggy banks come from 14th century Indonesia where terracotta containers shaped like boars with a slot on the top were made in Java and called ‘celengan’. The only way to get the coins out was to literally break the bank apart as there were no exit holes. It’s believed that the wild boars were chosen as their big round bellies were a symbol of prosperity.

Meanwhile in Europe, there are theories that the Germans also had coin boxes in the shape of pigs with the same beliefs as Indonesia. However, their use of piggy banks is noted to have started later some time during the 19th century.

Today, piggy banks come in all shapes and sizes. Although many people have switched to various electronic methods of saving, there’s no denying that the piggy bank continues to remain as an established symbol of saving money.

Ayon kay Gerdan Tolero, nagsimula siyang mag-ipon noong January 3, 2021. Nagulat na lamang siya dahil halos napuno na ang pinaglagyan niya ng naipong bente.

“Ang gagawin ko sa aking naipon ay balak ko pong mag-pisonet business dahil maraming bata na nangangailangan ng internet sa aming lugar kaya lang kulang pa iyong naipon ko pero pagsusumikapan ko pa rin.”
