PASAY, Philippines β€” A human trafficking victim instantly admitted that she was illegally recruited upon immigration secondary inspection.

According to members of the Bureau of Immigration’s (BI) Immigration Protection and Border Enforcement Section (I-PROBES), the victim alias Nina, was referred for secondary inspection for her numerous inconsistencies during primary inspection. She initially claimed to be bound for Hong Kong and Macau last November 3 for a four-day tour.

Upon approaching the secondary inspection officer, Nina immediately blurted out that she did not want to push through with her flight anymore, and admitted that she was actually bound to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) where she was recruited to work as a household service worker (HSW).

She stated that she was recruited by a Filipina that she met on Facebook, and was offered a monthly salary of Php 30,000.

BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said that Nina made the right decision, which could have saved her from exploitation abroad.

β€œWe are glad that our constant reminders are reaching our kababayan,” said Tansingco. β€œUltimately, the decision to protect oneself would come from the individual. Let us not put ourselves in danger by agreeing to departing through illegal means,” he added.

Nina’s case was immediately endorsed to the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking, who provided assistance and initiated an investigation against her recruiter.

PASAY, Philippines β€” The Bureau of Immigration (BI) said that it is encouraging arriving Filipinos post-Undas to utilize the airport’s electronic gates.

The E-Gates, according to BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco, can lessen processing time from the usual 45 seconds to as low as eight (8) seconds.

Tansingco said that they are prioritizing automating all BI services, prioritizing their operations at the airports. Currently, a total of 21 e-gates are distributed in major international airports nationwide.

Data shows that on the last day of October, a total of 32,045 passengers arrived, but only 5,210 utilized the E-Gates.

β€œDepartures significantly increased before Undas, and we project that arrivals will rise in the next few days after the long holiday,” said Tansingco.

The BI recorded a total of 32,352 departures on October 31, and sees that this could rise up to 35,000 in the next few days.

Tansingco shared that upon approval of the BI’s budget, they are planning to increase efficiency by adding more E-Gates, and plans to replace 50% of their manual operations by 2026.
