𝟭𝟬𝗞 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘

Located in an upscale subdivision in the south, 10K House occupies a site with expansive views of rolling hills and the bay. Rather than simply opening the house toward these vistas, the design explores how architecture can 𝗮𝗹𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗮 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗯𝘆 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗳𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆.

Skewed walls extend into the interiors, creating diagonal apertures that selectively frame the landscape—𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮 𝗳𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗿 𝗽𝗮𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗶𝗰 𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗮 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗰𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗼𝘀𝗲𝗱 𝘃𝗶𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲. From the balconies and decks, the views open back up, offering a contrasting sense of expansiveness.

The house is owned by a couple in finance—a quiet reference behind the name 10K House. Its materiality, however, remains deliberately simple and honest. Meandering frames and solid enclosures are expressed in cast-in-place concrete, complemented by natural wood planks at the eaves and accent walls.

An artist-led tropical landscape completes the composition, weaving lush greenery through the architecture and further shaping the views from within.

Here, the landscape is not simply something to look at. 𝗜𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝘀𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗶𝘁𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝗹𝘆 𝗲𝗱𝗶𝘁𝘀, 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗺𝗲𝘀, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝗵𝗼𝗿𝗲𝗼𝗴𝗿𝗮𝗽𝗵𝘀.

𝗦𝗟𝗜𝗧 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘

In the tropics, designing a home is always an exercise in balance.

Too much sunlight creates heat and glare, yet too little leaves spaces dark and disconnected from nature. Expansive openings create beautiful views and strengthen the relationship between inside and outside, but they must also provide privacy, comfort, and security.

𝙎𝙡𝙞𝙩 𝙃𝙤𝙪𝙨𝙚 was conceived as an exploration of this delicate equilibrium.

Throughout the home, carefully considered “slits” become the central architectural language. They appear as gaps between vertical screens and slatted elements, filtering light, encouraging movement of air, and framing carefully curated views. Elsewhere, they emerge as precise scores carved into floating, stone-clad planes, creating depth, shadow, rhythm, and a sense of lightness.

These interventions allow the house to embrace the qualities of tropical architecture: openness without exposure, shade without darkness, and privacy without isolation.
The material palette further reinforces this balance. Natural stone, warm timber, earthy tones, and exposed steel elements come together to create spaces that feel both refined and welcoming—luxurious yet approachable, expansive yet intimate.

More than a formal gesture, the slit becomes a device that shapes light, frames life, and transforms the everyday experience of dwelling in the tropics.

𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧 𝗢𝗖𝗘𝗔𝗡𝗚𝗔𝗧𝗘

Conceived as a mixed-use waterfront destination, this development is anchored by a yacht club that celebrates a lifestyle shaped by the ocean. More than a marina, it becomes the social heart of the community—where residents, sailors, and visitors gather around a shared appreciation for life on the water.

Residential towers are carefully oriented toward the marina, allowing homeowners to overlook the yachts below while enjoying uninterrupted views of the sea and horizon beyond. Here, the everyday experience is defined by changing tides, shifting light, and the quiet rhythm of the waterfront.

The architecture draws inspiration from the movement of the ocean itself. Balconies undulate in plan and elevation, creating a dynamic façade that evokes rolling waves. These fluid gestures lend the towers a sense of movement, as though the buildings are shaped by the sea rather than simply facing it.

A restrained palette of crisp white surfaces is complemented by warm timber accents, recalling the timeless elegance of sailing yachts. The result is an architecture that feels both contemporary and enduring—clean in expression, yet softened by natural materials and the warmth of coastal living.

More than a collection of buildings, the project is envisioned as a place where architecture, the waterfront, and community come together to create a distinctly maritime way of life.

𝙒𝙝𝙮 𝙙𝙞𝙙 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙟𝙤𝙞𝙣 𝘽+𝘼?
I first came across B+A at an Instagram post back in college. Their bold and expressive approach to design resonated with me as someone who's always liked exploring different possibilities and solutions that make a project unique. I wanted to join a firm that has that same principle of continuous iteration and curiosity.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙢𝙖𝙠𝙚𝙨 𝘽+𝘼 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙩 𝙛𝙧𝙤𝙢 𝙤𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧 𝙙𝙚𝙨𝙞𝙜𝙣 𝙛𝙞𝙧𝙢𝙨?
They understand that there is no one answer when it comes to architecture, and they embrace that by celebrating every nuance that comes with creating something that directly impacts different levels of society. They consider every possibility, every flaw, and every innovation to create something new each time. As a learning firm, they encourage us to keep asking questions. Experimentation is something that's required of us, which is always a good thing because it helps everyone learn from each other and grow as a collective.

𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙙𝙤 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙚𝙣𝙟𝙤𝙮 𝙖𝙗𝙤𝙪𝙩 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙩 𝘽+𝘼? 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙖𝙧𝙚 𝙮𝙤𝙪 𝙬𝙤𝙧𝙠𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙤𝙣 𝙣𝙤𝙬?
Being part of the team for quite some time has allowed me to work on a wide range of projects, from residential and housing developments to civic and interior work. What I enjoy most is the variety of projects we get to take on, and the openness we have to explore unfamiliar territory, approach design from different perspectives, and constantly imagine new possibilities. It’s something that has shaped the way I think about and approach the projects I continue to work on today.

I hope to collaborate more with people outside our firm and be better at expressing ideas. My goal is to gather information and wisdom as much as I can from different people. I want to contribute mostly by having a fresh take on things, and having an optimistic attitude.

Whether through engaging design crits, the constant back-and-forth that comes with developing ideas and drawings, or even through small everyday conversations, there’s always been a strong sense of camaraderie and shared enthusiasm that really reflects the energy of the team.

𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗖𝗬𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘

While the architecture of Halcyon House is expressed through quiet, restrained geometry, the interiors soften this discipline through warmth, texture, and craft.

Natural materials, tactile fabrics, and organic patterns inspired by nature were intentionally chosen to create spaces that feel welcoming rather than austere. Instead of pursuing perfection or uniformity, the interiors embrace richness through materiality and the character that handcrafted objects bring to everyday life.

More importantly, the home celebrates contemporary Filipino design. Furniture and artworks by Kenneth Cobonpue, Vito Selma, Ito Kish, Cacnio and Castrillo among others, are thoughtfully woven into the spaces—not as decorative pieces, but as expressions of culture and identity. Together, they tell a story of a home that is unmistakably contemporary, yet deeply rooted in the creativity and craftsmanship of the Philippines.

For us, architecture is only part of the experience. It is the dialogue between space, furniture, art, and the people who inhabit them that transforms a house into a home.

I joined Barchan - then Buensalido Architects - as an intern while still in my final years of studying Architecture. I was drawn to the firm because of its distinct design approach and the way it constantly pushed creative boundaries. During my time here, I’ve not only learned a great deal about architecture as a profession and how practice works in the Philippine setting, but I’ve also had the chance to really experience the culture that sits at the core of B+A - one that values curiosity, collaboration, and creating designs that feel thoughtful and meaningful.

𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗖𝗬𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘

At the heart of this home lies a courtyard—not carved from an already completed form, but established early in the design process as the environmental and social center around which the house is assembled. Bridges, galleries, and living spaces orbit this open core, drawing daylight, prevailing breezes, vegetation, and sky deep into every level of the residence. In this way, absence becomes as architecturally significant as built form, transforming the courtyard into both the physical and emotional heart of the home.

𝗛𝗔𝗟𝗖𝗬𝗢𝗡 𝗛𝗢𝗨𝗦𝗘

To us, tropical architecture is more than a response to climate. It is also a reflection of culture.

One of the defining qualities of the Filipino home is maaliwalas—a feeling that goes beyond spaciousness. It is the generosity of natural light, the movement of fresh air, and the seamless continuity between indoors and outdoors. Throughout Halcyon House, expansive operable glass walls dissolve into lanais, balconies, and gardens, allowing the home to breathe while extending everyday life into nature. The boundaries between inside and outside become intentionally blurred.

But these spaces also reflect something deeper about who we are as Filipinos. We are inherently relational. We gather, welcome, share, celebrate, and nurture. Our homes become places where families remain visually and physically connected, where flexible spaces adapt to changing occasions, and where architecture encourages togetherness rather than separation.

Here, terraces become living rooms, gardens become extensions of the home, and every opening becomes an invitation—for light, for wind, and ultimately, for people to connect.
Because architecture should not only respond to the climate in which it stands, but also to the culture it serves.
