Status : Schematics

A retreat by the sea, shaped by the quiet depth of earth and shadow. Rather than opening itself fully, the house filters—light, breeze, and views are carefully framed through layers of screens, deep canopies, and textured surfaces.

Drawing from the tones and tactility of sand, the architecture favors warmth over perfection. Thatched roofs, woven elements, and natural finishes create a space that feels grounded and lived-in—an embrace of imperfection, age, and material honesty.

Closed along the street for privacy, the house gradually unfolds toward the ocean—opening to sky, garden, and horizon. It is both shelter and sanctuary, where tropical architecture becomes a medium for rest, stillness, and slow living.

🏛️ ARC ICON 100: Ar. John Patrick Anthony "Jason" Buensalido

The Visionary: A contemporary leader who believes in the power of an "Architecture of Optimism"—creating spaces that are modern, festive, and undeniably Filipino to celebrate the nation's identity and collective spirit.

⭐ THE ICONIC PROJECT: THE INTERWEAVE (CIIT College of Arts and Technology)

The Design: Located in Quezon City, this 3,000 sq. m. campus is a masterful transformation of a long-abandoned structure into a vibrant architectural landmark. The facade features a high-performance "second skin" inspired by three key pillars: a tree for sustainability, a microchip for technology, and abstracted indigenous weaving patterns—such as those of the T'boli and Yakan—to represent Filipino culture.

The Impact: Recognized with high commendations at the 2021 World Architecture Festival, the project sets a benchmark for sustainable urban renewal and "architectural retrofitting". Its perforated aluminum skin functions as a brise-soleil, naturally ventilating the interior and reducing energy consumption while protecting the school from the noise of the busy Kamuning Road.

Placemaking: Reclaims the urban environment for the students through a central grand staircase that doubles as a social amphitheater for huddles and shows. The building serves as a "sparkplug" for the neighborhood, featuring massive 40-foot murals that celebrate Filipino intelligence and wisdom, effectively turning a school into a public beacon of arts and technology.

Position Held: Chief Design Ambassador of Buensalido + Architects (now Barchan + Architecture) and 2026 ARC ICON Awardee.

Professional Upgrade: Specialized in progressive tropical modernism and value-engineered "skin solutions" that achieve high-impact architectural expression without the excessive costs of major structural massing.

Advocacy: Promoting a "Filipino Renaissance" by urging architects to contemporize traditional principles and create responsive, meaning-filled environments that lift the human spirit.

The Design: Located in Marikina City, this 4,600 sq. m. complex features a series of sinuous, curved canopies and terracing forms reminiscent of the Banaue Rice Terraces. The canopies serve as canvases for a gradient of vibrant colors, symbolizing light and a festive Filipino spirit.

The Impact: Transformed a warehouse and office facility into a "sparkplug of development," revitalizing the neighborhood and encouraging homegrown local businesses to emerge around the landmark.

Placemaking: Creates an aspirational and participatory environment that replaces "cold exchanges" with a promise of a better tomorrow, using its vibrant presence to foster a sense of hope and community in the "Shoe Capital".

Position Held: Founder and Principal Architect of Buensalido + Architects (now Barchan + Architecture) and 2026 ARC ICON Awardee.

Professional Upgrade: Specialized in progressive tropical modernism and specialized commercial-industrial fusions that prioritize energy efficiency, such as utilizing reflective terracing for natural lighting.

The Visionary: A dynamic design team from Barchan + Architecture (formerly Buensalido+Architects) that champions "Optimistic Architecture"—the belief that buildings should be "palaces of art" that touch the emotions and celebrate life.

⭐ THE ICONIC PROJECT: THE LYFE TOWER

The Design: Located along Shaw Boulevard in Mandaluyong City, this 7,000-square-meter modern office tower is wrapped in a high-performance brise-soleil facade. The external system of fins functions as a "sunscreen," shifting its angles to block direct tropical heat while preserving views of the cityscape.

The Impact: Serves as a "herald of multiple promises" for the CNT Group of Companies, symbolizing a commitment to prosperity and the goal of uplifting the lives of the many people they serve through their manpower agency.

Placemaking: Reclaims a compact 350-square-meter corner lot by lifting the main lobby to an upper ground level and featuring a rooftop lounge and restaurant. It is designed as a "future-forward" landmark intended to inspire the community to elevate the quality of urban design in the area.

🛡️ LEADERSHIP & ADVOCACY

Position Held: 2026 ARC ICON Awardees; Principals and Lead Architects at Barchan + Architecture.

Professional Upgrade: Specialized in solving complex urban constraints through vertical stacking and high-tech climate solutions, effectively demonstrating that high-rise tropical structures can be sustainable and individualistic rather than generic glass boxes.

Advocacy: Promoting architecture as a "testimony and a constant reminder" of a mission, advocating for structures that serve as a projection of excellence and a promise of a better life for their occupants and the city at large.
