“Are my ads working — or am I just BURNING money?”

👀 “Where should I look?”

There’s a LOT of data when you open the Google Ads dashboard.

Should you focus on impressions?

Interaction rate?

Clicks?

The ad platforms seem to have designed their reporting to confuse us.

When it comes to results, the CONVERSION metric is where you should focus on.

💡 But not all conversions are created equal.

I audited an account last week.

There were 200+ ‘conversions’ but the client wasn’t happy.

Upon closer inspection, barely a dozen of those conversions were actually LEADS.

The rest are PAGE VIEWS.

Sneaky.

🔍 This is why it’s crucial to VERIFY the accuracy of your conversion numbers.

How?

Compare what’s on Google Ads to the ACTUAL LEADS you see in your CRM.

If they don’t add up, ask your ads person to break down what’s included in the conversions column.

Why not use your website?

That’d be more convenient, wouldn’t it?

It all comes down to purpose.

💡 The purpose of a website is to inform visitors –

About your business, your services, perhaps about who you are as a company.

And most website homepages?

They have A LOT OF LINKS.

🗺️ Which encourages visitors to EXPLORE.

To know more about your business.

To learn more about you.

When you’re running ads, you’re PAYING FOR EACH CLICK.

💸 When each pair of eyeballs costs you money,

You can’t afford to let people wander.

You must be FOCUSED.

You want to give them just enough information to make one decision.

Not to “go to this link” or “read this other page”

Only ONE DECISION:
👉 To contact your business or not.

And the best way to do that?

Use a page DEDICATED for ads.

A page that presents your offer concisely and in the best possible way.

🤝 That maximizes trust and minimizes risk.

And gives the visitor only one choice to make:

Take action — or not.

It’s a common scenario:

A business runs ads.

Leads come in…

But no one avails the service.

If that’s you, ask this:

❓ “Is the problem my LEAD QUALITY or my SALES PROCESS?”

As a rough benchmark, you want to be closing at least 2 out of every 10 leads.

That’s a conservative baseline for US service businesses.

Let’s break it down.

🧲 LEAD QUALITY

If you've been running Google Ads for 3+ months (with enough budget and the right setup),

You should be getting QUALIFIED leads — people actively searching for what you offer.

If not?

It’s time to review your strategy — or your ads person.

📞 SALES PROCESS

I had a client in the past who was NOT picking up the phone.

We were generating dozens of leads per week — but they barely closed anyone.

The lesson?

💡 Ads are only half the equation.

You also need to CLOSE.

Ask yourself:
- Are you (or your sales team) picking up the phone promptly?
- Are you handling objections with reassurance or guarantees?
- Are you following up with leads who don’t convert right away?

📊 PRO TIP: Train the algorithm

Feed Google data on qualified leads — not just any call or form fill.

The more “good” data it gets, the better it performs.

So start tracking qualified leads early.

Eventually, you’ll be able to tell Google:

“Get me more of those!”
