& sometimes,
in the act of moving on
you relive pain everyday
until there is nothing left
to feel anymore.

The work of Filipino artist Mariel Garcia inspires the acceptance of pain as a part of healing. Garcia sees her work as elixirs to address malaise rising from physical or mental traumas. Her works revolve around the use of the macabre and occult entwined with flora and fauna to reflect upon perceived malignancy and find its true transformative nature. Using oils on canvas, she depicts affliction through the arrangement of the human body, with flowers and creatures symbolizing catharsis. Washes of color add a glamour to the imagery, a shimmer that suggests the virtue of the ensemble.
At a young age Garcia grew an interest in medicine and herbology, her grandmother endearing her to identifying local plants and animals, as well as an interest in human anatomy and biology. This interest is expressed through a healing of the soul. By tackling how one’s spiritual state manifests physically, she describes a visual remedy from unresolved hurt, invisible but felt.
