Noong June 26, nag-take effect ang pinakamababang contestability threshold sa kasaysayan ng Pilipinas. Karamihan ng mga negosyong sakop nito, hindi pa rin alam.

Simula noon, kahit sinong establishment na may 100 kW peak demand ay pwede nang pumili ng sariling electricity supplier. Dati, 500 kW ang floor. Sa praktika: mga school, hotel, BPO floor, cold storage, at light manufacturing — pasok na. Mga 12,000 bagong eligible na customer. At kung multi-branch ang negosyo mo, pwede mong pagsamahin ang mga site para mag-qualify.

Ito ang lagi kong nakikita sa mga audit: mga kumpanyang nagbabayad ng captive rates kahit qualified na pala sila. Walang nagsabi sa kanila. Nakasulat na ang sagot sa bill nila — walang tumingin.

Isang bagay na dapat mong malaman bago ka makipag-usap sa kahit anong supplier: ESCO (Energy Service Company) kami, hindi RES ( Retail Electricity Supplier). Hindi kami nagbebenta ng kuryente. Ang trabaho namin ay nasa side mo ng mesa — i-confirm kung qualified ka, i-compare ang mga offer, i-negotiate ang kontrata, at ayusin muna ang demand profile mo para lakas ang dating mo sa negosasyon.

Ilang minuto lang ang eligibility check. I-send mo sa akin ang peak demand mo (nasa Meralco bill mo yan) at sasabihin ko kung contestable ka. Libre ang sagot.

We sat down with the Philippine Green Building Council (PhilGBC) together with Prasad Deosarkar of IES, Business Development Manager for Southeast Asia, to explore how to bring serious building performance simulation to more Filipino green building professionals.

We presented our Level 2 energy audit findings to MLM Foods last week, and the room wasn't just their facility engineers. Top management and finance sat in on it too.

That's on purpose. A Level 2 audit digs deeper than a walk-through: detailed data on how the plant actually uses energy, and a list of upgrades with real numbers attached, cost, savings, and payback for each one. Engineers know where the energy goes. Finance decides what gets funded. Nothing moves without both in the room.

Electricity and diesel costs have climbed for manufacturers across the Philippines these past few months, so every peso saved on energy is a peso that can go back into production. Big update for Philippine businesses: the ERC just lowered the threshold for choosing your own electricity supplier, from 500 kW down to 100 kW.

If your establishment's average monthly demand is 100 kW or more, you're no longer stuck with your utility's default rate. You can shop for a better deal under RCOA, or team up with other consumers through the Retail Aggregation Program.

On July 2, industry partners and academe convened for the PE2–UniED Roundtable to tackle a question at the heart of workforce readiness: how do we close the energy efficiency skills gap between what companies need and what graduates bring to the table?

PE2 and Unil ED Participants were joined by William Alcantara of Vega Energy Services weighed in on critical manpower needs, the technical and soft-skill gaps most common among applicants, the equipment and certifications required to close them, and the industry practitioners who could help teach the next generation.

We spent two days at the Coca-Cola EuroPacific Aboitiz Bacolod Plant running a Level 1 energy audit.

Here's the thing about auditing a Coca-Cola plant: they already run a tight ship on energy performance. So a walk-through audit isn't about finding obvious waste. It's about finding the finer gains a well-run facility can still unlock.

Nelson and I worked the floor with a team that knew its own systems cold. Good engineers make the job better.

Then we toured Bacolod and enjoyed its food. For what good is it if we miss out on one of the best cuisines in the country. The Ruins at dusk. Chicken inasal off the grill. A bowl of kansi. Piaya for the trip home.

Good work and good food in the same day. Both done right.
