Thank you to Ariva Academy for the opportunity to speak about leadership and people engagement at the Asian Institute of Management with 100+ invited participants from different companies and industries. Leadership becomes more challenging when managing diverse personalities, work styles, and expectationsโ€”which is why self-awareness, communication, and adaptability matter more than ever today.

In this workshop, we discussed key leadership principles:

โœ… Self-awareness and leadership adjustment โ€” effective leaders understand their own communication and management style first, then learn how to adjust depending on the personalities, motivations, and behaviors of their team members.

โœ… Feedback should be frequent and spontaneous โ€” coaching should not only happen during formal evaluations. Informal conversations, quick check-ins, and real-time recognition often create stronger engagement and accountability inside teams.

โœ… Choice of words matters when giving feedback โ€” leaders must learn how to communicate concerns clearly without sounding attacking or dismissive. The right tone and wording can encourage ownership, while the wrong delivery can create defensiveness and disengagement.

๐Ÿ“ŒTip #1 RESET EXPECTATIONS EARLY

Have honest conversations early and acknowledge that the dynamic has changed. You can still be warm, approachable, and friendly, but decisions involving deadlines, accountability, performance, and fairness now carry more weight. This is business continuity. Friendships and professional relationships can co-exist, but a deadline set at 8AM, is a deadline that will be followed.
