As AI makes more work easier to replicate, business leaders are being pushed to rethink a harder question: not how many people they need, but what they need people for, and what they are willing to pay a premium for.

In a recent Deloitte on the Dot article, Deloitte Southeast Asia Technology & Transformation Director Chiharu Maki explains that organizations will not pay a premium for human effort simply because it is human, nor for AI proficiency alone. Maki cautions that the more work AI can perform, the less sense it makes to reward people for just being busy, emphasizing that the premium will go to those who can direct intelligence, human or artificial, toward outcomes that matter and are willing to own the consequences.

For business leaders, this is a reminder that AI strategy isn't only a technology decision, but a talent and rewards decision. Getting clear now on which human contributions truly create value will determine whether AI investments translate into business impact.
