Zenkoji Temple is the spiritual heart of Nagano and one of the oldest and most important Buddhist temples in Japan.

It was founded in the seventh century and is known for housing the first Buddhist statue ever brought to the country, although the original is never shown to the public.

Visitors walk through the main hall and can enter a pitch black underground passage that represents the search for enlightenment.

The temple grounds are large and filled with smaller halls, gates, and statues that reflect more than a thousand years of history.

The street leading to the temple is lined with traditional shops selling handmade crafts and local snacks.

Zenkoji is busy during major festivals yet remains welcoming throughout the year.

It is an ideal starting point for any visit to Nagano.
