The climate and energy experts have warned that the country’s industrial sector must be rapidly transit toward renewable energy and low-carbon production to remain competitive in global markets, which is increasingly shaped by climate regulations.

This call was made at the launch of three research studies on industrial de-carbonization, collectively urging policymakers and businesses to prioritise solar adoption, emissions reduction, and long-term energy planning.

The event, hosted by Alternate Development Services (ADS) at a local hotel, brought together academics, industry representatives, civil society members, and policymakers to examine the future of energy use in Pakistan’s textile and leather sectors, two major contributors to national exports and emissions.

ADS convened a diverse group of experts and industry stakeholders to discuss Pakistan’s journey toward a just and equitable energy transition in Faisalabad.
During the event, we launched three major studies that map solar adoption in the textile sector, assess the integration of off-grid solar into the grid, and analyse decarbonization potential in the leather and textile sectors.
The discussion reinforced that global buyer pressure—not motivation alone—is shaping the pace of renewable energy adoption across Pakistan’s industrial sectors.

ADS successfully organized a one-day technical training workshop in Peshawar!

On October 2, 2025, Alternate Development Services (ADS) held the workshop “Beyond CO₂: Emission Calculations, Methane Monitoring & Real Sequestration Metrics” in Peshawar.
The event brought together experts, practitioners, and participants from academia, government, NGOs, and industry to strengthen technical capacity in GHG emission calculations, methane monitoring, and sequestration metrics.

Pakistan among top 10 methane emitters; experts urge food and beverage sector to adopt decarbonization strategies

Pakistan ranks among the world’s top 10 methane-emitting countries, said Prof. Dr. Sanaullah of the University of Agriculture Faisalabad, stressing the need for mitigation measures in rice production and livestock emissions.
He was speaking at the Food and Beverage Consultation on “Carbon and Methane Emission Assessment and Prevention in the Food and Beverage Sector”, organized by Alternate Development Services (ADS) and Lok Sujag at a local hotel in Lahore. The event gathered experts from academia, industry, media, and civil society to deliberate on the hidden climate costs of the food and beverage sector and explore pathways to decarbonization.

The Food & Beverage (F&B) sector is one of the highest emitting sectors in Pakistan — from production to processing and even disposal, it releases significant levels of CO₂ and methane (a highly potent greenhouse gas).

Despite global calls for methane mitigation, targeted action in Pakistan’s F&B sector remains limited. This consultation is a step toward change — bringing together stakeholders to share knowledge and build strategies for a sustainable future.

This documentary features insights from industrial leaders and representatives from the PSGMEA, taking viewers to the heart of Pakistan’s sports goods capital. Here, artisans and machines collaborate to produce world-class products, including footballs, cricket gear, biker jackets, gloves, and more. Whether for the FIFA World Cup or a local tournament, much of the equipment originates from Sialkot.

With over $300 million in annual exports and trusted by major brands like Adidas, Nike, and Puma, Sialkot has become a symbol of quality and innovation. The city contributes nearly 6% to Pakistan’s total exports, establishing itself as a global player in the sports industry.

The documentary highlights Sialkot’s commitment to a green transformation, focusing on low-carbon and sustainable production. Pakistan's Budget 2025–26: A Missed Opportunity for a Just Energy Transition

Despite the climate emergency and Pakistan’s rising vulnerability, the new budget presents a conflicting energy vision.
18% GST on imported solar panels is framed as support for local industry—but in reality, it risks derailing one of the few success stories in our energy sector: the exponential growth in solar adoption. With nearly $1.4B in solar imports in early 2024 alone, the move hits households, SMEs, and climate goals.
At the same time, the government slashes industrial power tariffs—from 14 to 9 cents/unit—and offers 7,000MW of surplus hydropower to boost exports. While this may support manufacturing, it widens the gap between industrial subsidies and citizen access to affordable clean energy.
The new carbon levy on fossil fuels—though a welcome signal—is dwarfed by policy contradictions. Taxing solar, while lightly touching polluting sectors, is policy incoherence in real time.
The so-called “climate-resilient budget” allocates billions for mitigation and adaptation—but without implementation clarity, impact metrics, or transparency. Experts warn: this is climate finance without climate governance.
As solar firms report cancellations and customers back out due to higher costs, the real question is: Who is the energy transition really for?

It was time for a budget that aligned industrial revival with environmental justice, not one that sacrificed clean energy access at the altar of protectionism.
