Toba Tek Singh, Punjab – A high-level mission from the World Bank, led by Mr. Masood Ahmed (Task Team Leader), along with Ch. Muhammad Ashraf, Director General Agriculture Water Management (DGAWM), visited under construction HEIS site Chak No. 477 JB to evaluate the quality of material of the High-Efficiency Irrigation System (HEIS) being installed by the On-Farm Water Management (OFWM) Wing, Punjab.
The visit was part of an ongoing assessment of the Punjab Irrigated-Agriculture Productivity Improvement Project (PIPIP), which aims to promote water-saving technologies and sustainable agricultural practices across the province. The mission team was given a comprehensive field briefing on the technical specifications, operational efficiency, and economic benefits of the HEIS installation.
The delegation observed the system’s ability to enhance crop productivity while significantly reducing water usage—a vital step in addressing Pakistan's escalating water scarcity. The visit highlighted the success of drip and sprinkler irrigation systems in ensuring "More Crop per Drop" and improving farm incomes in water-stressed areas.
Ch. Muhammad Ashraf emphasized the Government of Punjab’s strategic vision for agricultural transformation through smart irrigation practices. “This site is a model of modern water management. Through HEIS, we are empowering farmers to grow more with less water,” he stated.
Mr. Masood Ahmed praised the OFWM team for their technical ex*****on and the farmer’s active participation. “The integration of technology and local expertise is key to sustainability. This initiative demonstrates how innovation can drive resilience in agriculture,” he remarked.
The mission concluded with recommendations for expanding the HEIS footprint and strengthening technical training for farmers. The World Bank reaffirmed its commitment to supporting Pakistan’s efforts toward climate-smart agriculture and efficient resource management.
