🔍 "Channel Sampling of Chromite Lenses in Dunites
Key Field Practices in Ultramafic Complexes"
Chromite mineralization in dunite-hosted ultramafic complexes is lensoidal, structurally controlled, and highly variable. Reliable grade estimation depends not on grab samples, but on geologically controlled channel (chip) sampling.
🧭 Why Channel Sampling?
✔ Captures true thickness and grade variability
✔ Reduces bias from selective sampling
✔ Defines ore–waste boundaries
✔ Supports early resource evaluation
📐 Geological Control Is Critical
Before sampling, always establish:
▪ Lens orientation (strike/dip/plunge)
▪ Structural controls (shears, folds)
▪ True thickness vs outcrop width
👉 Channels must be cut perpendicular to true lens thickness, not simply across the outcrop.
🪨 Sampling Best Practices
▪ Channel width: 5–10 cm | Depth: 3–5 cm
▪ Sample perpendicular to mineralization
▪ Subdivide thick lenses into 0.5–1.0 m intervals
▪ Minimum sample weight: 5 kg (preferred)
📏 Spacing Along Strike
▪ Reconnaissance: 10–20 m
▪ Detailed work: 2–5 m
▪ Deformed zones: closer spacing required
⚠️ Common Pitfalls
🚫 Grab or selective sampling
🚫 Sampling parallel to lenses
🚫 Ignoring internal waste bands
🚫 Inconsistent channel dimensions
✅ Key Takeaway
Good chromite data starts with good geology.
Channel sampling done systematically and structurally informed is the foundation of reliable chromite evaluation in dunite-hosted ultramafic systems.
💬 Sampling is not just collection it is geological interpretation.
