These photographs are from a Post Distribution Monitoring (PDM) and Beneficiary Satisfaction Assessment conducted by AAYAN for Mercy Corps in Sindh and Balochistan.

Field visits such as these provide an opportunity to sit with communities, listen to their experiences, and understand how project support is perceived by the people it is intended to serve.

Beyond the numbers, these conversations help us understand what is working well, what challenges remain, and what improvements communities would like to see. They also remind us that beneficiaries are not simply recipients of assistance; they are important sources of feedback, learning, and insight.

Looking back at these field visits is a reminder of the importance of community engagement in generating evidence and supporting better programme decisions.

Looking back at some early experiences during the US Legislative Fellowship Programme visit in Washington DC.

Interesting how many conversations from that time around governance, public policy, citizen engagement and institutional systems remain equally relevant today, perhaps even more important in an increasingly complex development landscape.

Over the years, the context has changed, the tools have evolved, and now AI and data systems are part of the conversation too. But one thing still remains central: meaningful development impact depends on strong institutions, evidence, learning and people-led systems.

Always valuable to reflect on where the journey started.

Artificial Intelligence is changing how information is produced, analysed, and consumed across the world.

But in development, governance, research, and community work, human understanding, context, ethics, and lived realities still matter deeply.

The real question is not whether AI will replace humans. The more important question is how AI can support better thinking, better evidence, and better decisions without losing the human side of development.

This conversation is becoming increasingly important for researchers, evaluators, policymakers, and development practitioners globally.

In a world increasingly shaped by data, one important question still remains:

Are we only producing information, or are we actually strengthening decision-making, accountability, and impact?

Across governance, development, research, and public systems, evidence matters most when it helps translate realities into meaningful action.

At AAYAN, we believe that stronger systems require more than reporting alone. They require evidence that is understood, trusted, contextualized, and connected to people, institutions, and decisions.

This space will share reflections, insights, field realities, evidence discussions, and perspectives from Pakistan’s development and governance landscape.

Artificial Intelligence is rapidly transforming the way we work, write, analyse and communicate.

But while most discussions focus on productivity and automation, another question deserves greater attention:

If AI continues to think for us, what happens to human thinking itself?

Sharing reflections from practical experience in research, governance and MEL systems on where AI genuinely helps, where it still struggles, and why human judgment still matters.

Maternal health discussions often focus on physical care, while mental health receives far less attention despite its long-term impact on women, families and communities. Greater awareness, accessible support systems and community-level understanding remain equally important parts of the conversation.
