ISLAMABAD: The Finance Minister Saleem Mandviwala has approved an amnesty scheme for non-custom paid vehicles and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will issue a notification in this regard soon, a senior official of the FBR said on Tuesday.
“After getting approval from the finance minister, the FBR has sent a draft notification to the ministry of law for vetting,” he said.
The official said that around 150,000 vehicles would be expected to be regularised under the new scheme and the FBR would stand to net Rs10 to 15 billion in revenue as a result.
On the directives of the Supreme Court of Pakistan, tax authorities had identified 150,000 illegal vehicles with duplicate registration books, of which around 3,000 of local and foreign origin, including 550 land cruisers, 300 Mercedes, 1,500 Vego, and 2,500 Corollas were seized.
Data compilation is going on and the number of illegal vehicles may go up to 250,000 in next few days, he said.
During the ongoing campaign against non-custom paid vehicles, the FBR identified a person who has 618 vehicles registered in his name, including 590 motorcycles, cars and jeeps despite the fact that it doesnot have a national tax number (NTN). Majority of the vehicles bearing same chassis number were registered with various provincial excise and registration departments.
Sources said the FBR wants to incentivise the owners by regularising the said vehicles against payment of some duty.
The Supreme Court of Pakistan had ordered the revenue body to take stern action against non-custom paid vehicles across the country during its hearing of the case related to Balochistan’s situation.
There are total 2.8 million vehicles plying on roads nationwide, including 340,000 imported cars, stated the data compiled by the Pakistan Revenue Automation Limited. The FBR has names and addresses of owners of illegal cars, said the official.
