Somewhere between nostalgia, curiosity, and “let’s see what happens,” we apparently lost approximately 503,382,920,929.283 gallons of water in the past 24 hours because of the 80s ChatGPT challenge. 😭
And honestly, the internet has a very special talent for turning absolutely anything into a collective experience.
The 80s challenge was never just about getting an old-school picture. It was about seeing ourselves in a completely different era — different clothes, different hairstyles, different rooms, different technology, different energy. For a few minutes, we got to imagine what our lives might have looked like before smartphones, social media, and everything being documented.
But then came the conversations about how much energy AI uses, how much water can be involved in cooling data centres, and suddenly our little nostalgia experiment became part of a much bigger conversation.
It’s funny because we often think of technology as something invisible. We type a prompt, get an image, laugh at it, post it, and move on. We don't see the servers running somewhere. We don't see the electricity being consumed. We don't see the infrastructure behind the screen.
That doesn't mean we should panic over every AI image we generate. But it does mean we should probably become a little more conscious about how casually we use powerful technology.
The internet has always had trends. AI has simply made those trends faster, easier, and sometimes much more resource-intensive.
So yes, enjoy the nostalgia. Make the silly picture. Laugh at your imaginary 80s alter ego.
Just remember that even something that feels completely digital still has a very real physical footprint somewhere in the world.
And apparently, ours is somewhere around 503 billion gallons of water. 💀
The 80s really said: we're taking the whole water supply with us.
