Meet our Research Intern for the Pakistan Shipwreck Archive Project!

For the Pakistan Shipwreck Archive Project, MaritimEA in collaboration with the Nautical Archaeology Society and support of Lloyd's Register Foundation, seeks to address a critical gap in maritime archaeology in Pakistan, where despite a rich seafaring history, underwater cultural heritage remains understudied. By cross-referencing Lloyd’s Register of Shipping archives with regional records, such as the Sindh and Bombay Gazettes, and a range of UK based India Office Records, the team will seek to create the first comprehensive reference database of wrecks in Pakistani waters from the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Two years of the Digital Heritage Trails Project!

We engaged more than 1100 students across 30 schools between Karachi and Keti Bandar in the Indus Delta.

Our documentaries explored how climate change has impacted sites of cultural, historic, maritime, and economic importance and how climate change has affected the people connected to these sites.

We helped fisherfolk communities near Lahiri Bandar establish the Lahiri Bandar Historic Tour to help raise awareness of the numerous forgotten historical sites dotting our coastal landscape.

Check out the video https://youtu.be/tvXVeXIc_AU to learn more about the Digital Heritage Trails Project and visit www.lostcitiesofthedelta.org to explore the forgotten ports of the Indus Delta.

Digital technologies are becoming increasingly powerful, accessible, and analysis-ready. The Digital Heritage Archive Project (DHAP) contributes to the sustainable development of Pakistan’s cultural heritage sector by creating durable digital preservation frameworks, building technical skills, and standardising workflows and promotes long-term cultural resilience in the face of climate change and natural disasters.

Through the Digital Heritage Archive Project, MaritimEA Research seeks to establish a coordinated, standardised, and sustainable framework for the digital preservation of Pakistan’s cultural heritage.

There is a critical need for national-level infrastructure that can support the stewardship and long-term maintenance of digital cultural heritage data. This project responds directly to these needs through a combination of stakeholder consultation, capacity-building, standard setting, and strategic planning for a future National Digital Heritage Archive (NDHA).

📣 Announcing the seven projects in four countries exploring what happens when heritage meets tech.

👩‍💻 This March, the Cultural Protection Fund unveils the Digital Heritage Pilot projects that highlight how digital tools and community-led innovation are shaping heritage protection.

From AI ethics and VR storytelling to digitising archives and building national frameworks, these wide-ranging projects highlight the two-way relationship between us and technology.

This is the first time underwater archaeological investigations have been undertaken in the Indus Delta.

It was a pleasure working with the Directorate General of Antiquities & Archaeology on the underwater investigations around Lahiri Bandar and we look forward to future such collaborations.

In collaboration with the AKU-ISMC and as part of the ‘Lahori Bandar and Endangered Sites of the Indus Delta Project’ (supported by the ALIPH and the Max van Berchem Foundations), MaritimEA conducted underwater archaeological investigations in the water ways adjacent to the historical site of Lahori Bandar.

The MaritimEA diving team, including Amer Bazl Khan, Shabib Asghar, Amal Hashim, and Olivier Onezime from Inrap, France, explored submerged remains of structures associated with the 16-18th century Mughal period site. A welcome addition to the team was Ms. Zahida Qadri and Mr. Kashif Khan from the Culture, Tourism, Antiquities & Archives Department, Government of Sindh. To support future collaborations in relation to underwater cultural heritage, the MaritimEA team provided in-water training for the Sindh Culture department staff.

The month of February 2026 was an exciting month of archaeological investigations at the 16-18th century Mughal port of Lahiri Bandar. MaritimEA collaborated with the Aga Khan University’s Institute for the Study of Muslim Cultures (AKU-ISMC) on the Lahori Bandar and Endangered Sites of the Indus Delta project, supported by the ALIPH Foundation and the Max van Berchem Foundation. The archaeological team also included the Government of Sindh’s Department for Culture, Tourism, Antiquities, and Archives, and Sindh Exploration and Adventure Society (SEAS).

Following MaritimEA’s recent work on Indus Delta sites, this new project is an exciting collaboration for research into and preservation of the historical ports of the Indus Delta. Future investigations will seek to map the full extent of Lahiri Bandar and also investigate the ruins of the nearby site of Jam Jaskar Goth.
