'GarbageCAN!' is a Social Entrepreneurship effort aimed at tackling the garbage problem in Karachi. A lot of the trash on the streets can be recycled. The rest can be taken care of in a clean and environmentally friendly manner. While not a full 'waste management' project just yet, 'GarbageCAN!' will try to enable and encourage people to recycle till it becomes second nature for them. We, at 'Garb
ageCAN!', believe that the Karachi garbage CAN be cleaned up and also made useful. In the wise words of Oscar the Grouch from Sesame Street: 'It's called garbage can, not garbage cannot.'
You and I and every single one of us needs to take responsibility and ownership of the city we live in. We will also try to provide you with an incentive to do so: If you have recyclable materials such as books, plastic bottles, cardboard boxes etc. that you would like to get rid of, we'll come and take them off your hands. OR If you would like to sell them, we'll come and purchase them from you at market rates by weight*. Garbage CAN make you money too! Pakistan has had a longstanding tradition of recycling.. we just know it as 'kabar'.. So, just think of us as the modern 'kabar walas' that will take from you and give it to the recyclers.. It'll be easy to explain to the older generations! ;)
