Public Wi-Fi & The VPN Shield
The Threat:
Free Wi-Fi at airports, cafes, and malls in Pakistan is convenient, but it is often an "Open Network." This means the data traveling between your phone and the Wi-Fi router is not encrypted. A hacker sitting in the same cafe can use simple "Sniffer" software to see your passwords, credit card details, and private chats.
How the Scam Works:
1. The Man-in-the-Middle (MitM): The hacker inserts themselves between your device and the internet. You think you are talking to the website, but you are actually sending everything to the hacker first.
2. Packet Sniffing: Hackers capture the "packets" of data flying through the air. If the website doesn't have a padlock icon (HTTPS), your password is sent in plain text.
Safety Tips for Safer.pk Readers:
• Use a VPN: A Virtual Private Network (VPN) creates a "secure tunnel" for your data. Even if a hacker captures it, the data will look like gibberish code that they cannot read.
• Avoid "Sensitive" Tasks: Never check your bank account or log into your email on public Wi-Fi. Save these tasks for your mobile data (4G/5G).
• Forget the Network: After using public Wi-Fi, tell your phone to "Forget Network" so it
• Turn off Sharing: Ensure "File Sharing" and "AirDrop" are turned off when connected to a public hotspot.
