Or will they be those that learn how to manage technology better than everyone else?

Technology investment should begin with the business—not with the technology.

Before approving the next major investment, executives should ask:

🔹 What business problem are we solving?
🔹 What organizational capability are we building?
🔹 What needs to change in our people and processes?
🔹 How will we measure business value?
🔹 Will this investment strengthen our long-term competitiveness?

The last question is particularly important.

𝗧𝗘𝗖𝗛𝗡𝗢𝗟𝗢𝗚𝗬 𝗧𝗥𝗔𝗡𝗦𝗙𝗢𝗥𝗠𝗔𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 ≠ 𝗣𝗥𝗢𝗝𝗘𝗖𝗧 𝗖𝗢𝗠𝗣𝗟𝗘𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡

How should we measure technology transformation?

Traditionally, projects are evaluated by asking:

✓ Was it delivered on time?
✓ Was it within budget?
✓ Was the system implemented?
✓ Was it adopted?

These measures matter—but they are not enough.

Executives should also ask:

🔹 Did decision-making improve?
🔹 Did processes improve?
🔹 Did our people become more capable?
🔹 Did customer or stakeholder value improve?
🔹 Did we build a capability that will continue after the project ends?

𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗻𝘀𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗯𝗲 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝘀𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗯𝘆 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗱𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿—not simply by whether a technology project was completed.
