R and RA are not grades. They are history.

Every other mark tells you how the car looks today. These two tell you what happened to it.

R — major damage, repaired.
RA — major damage, repaired, and some of it is still visible.

A repainted R-grade car can look perfect in photos. The sheet is the only place it still shows.

One number decides the price of every car sold at a Japanese auction.

S to 4.5 is excellent.
4 and 3.5 is normal used condition.
3 and below means real wear.

R and RA sit outside the scale completely — those are not condition, they are history.

Save this and check it before your next bid.

XX means that panel is not the original one.

It was replaced.

And the sheet records it forever — after export, after resale, after a fresh coat of paint.

The car changes. The record does not.

W is the mark that costs buyers the most.

It does not mean damage. It means repaint.

Something happened to that panel and someone covered it.

And when you see A2 and W2 together on the same panel, you are usually looking at a repaired accident.

Every scratch on a Japanese auction sheet is written as a letter and a number.

A1 is light. A4 runs most of the panel.

Inspectors write these in seconds. Most buyers never learn what they mean — and that gap is exactly what sellers rely on.

Save this one.

🚗 冠水車 — the one word that should pause any Japanese used-car deal.
It means "flood vehicle": a car that sat in water after a flood, typhoon or tsunami.
A flood car can be cleaned, dried and cosmetically repaired — then re-graded as a tidy Grade 4 and sold like nothing happened. But the damage doesn't leave with the water: electrical corrosion for years, hybrid batteries sit low and exposed, hidden rust and mould, ECU failures months later.
The grade only describes today's surface. The 冠水車 declaration stays on the Japanese auction record forever.

Japanese auction grade scale — the complete reference 🇯🇵

The grade is the most important number on any auction sheet. Here’s what each one means:

R — repaired after accident
RA — repaired, damage still remains
1 — major damage throughout
2 — significant damage
3 — noticeable wear or minor repairs
3.5 — above average, few imperfections
4 — good, normal used condition
4.5 — very good, small scratches only
5 — excellent, minor wear
6 — near-new, virtually no wear
S — brand new condition

Three zones to remember:
🔴 Danger zone: R, RA, 1, 2
🟠 Careful zone: 3, 3.5
🟢 Safe zone: 4, 4.5, 5, 6, S

Save this reference for the next time you read a Japanese auction sheet.

The Japanese auction grade is the single most important number on the sheet — but most buyers misread it.

Here’s the decode:

Grade 4+ → safe to buy
Grade 3.5 / 3 → negotiate harder, inspect more
Grade R · RA · 1 · 2 · 99 → walk away
Grade “—“ → undeclared damage (treat as R)

Save this for your next auction check.

Why we built Deeper Scan 🇯🇵

A buyer asked us a question last month: “Has this car been auctioned before?”

The auction sheet didn’t tell him. The seller didn’t tell him. And the answer mattered — because the car had been on three different auctions over six years, and the mileage on the latest sheet was lower than it was on a previous one.

That’s the kind of detail that costs people money. So we built a service to surface it.

Deeper Scan traces the full history of any Japanese vehicle. Every past auction. Every grade. Every mileage reading. And then it goes further — a 9-point risk audit, market valuation in USD, theft check, and an expert verdict.

Everything you need to buy with confidence, in one report.

✓ Full auction history timeline
✓ 9-point risk audit
✓ Confidence score 0–100
✓ Market valuation
✓ Theft & stolen check
✓ Mileage rollback detection
✓ Critical issues panel
✓ Expert verdict
✓ Full English translation included

Ready in ~30 minutes. Available now.
