The weather is turning cold but is in full swing. Some words of advice:

1. If you think marriage can save you from the issues you face in your own family then think again. Most probably you will carry your issues from your life before into your life after. An abusive father will be replaced by a mother-in-law you cannot stand up to.
2. Happily ever after doesn't exist primarily because you only start working on the relationship once you get married and it's a difficult journey. Sometimes in this journey you realize that you are not a good fit for each other and that's OK. Longevity of a marriage doesn't necessarily reflect its quality.
3. If you have any mental health issue try to address it before you get married because chances are that it will be aggravated.

Hello, I'm creating this space to come together and talk about South Asian family dynamics and relationships in a more informed way.

These conversations are difficult to hold because of strong hierarchies and unsaid rules. This learning circle aims to unpack these complex systems and offer a framework for our collective learning.

Why I feel this discussion is important:

I have been a marriage therapist working in Pakistan for the last 10 years. I have trained other therapists in this area but now I feel there is a need for more context specific dialogue to emerge and shared learning that needs to happen rather than just training in what already exists. I look forward to exploring together with you.

Limited spots available. Please email expressions of interest to [email protected]

What happens after the happily after? I collaborated with Saaya Health to moderate a discussion on the impact that marriage and family dynamics can have on mental health and wellbeing. I was joined by Tauseef and Tanya Imran to add their insights to this important conversation

Omar is an experienced psychotherapist, clinical supervisor, and trainer presently based in Australia. He’s a Fulbright scholar who completed his graduate studies from New York University.

Tanya is the Group Administrator of the closed Facebook group, Ask the Village and the Average Mommy. Ask the village is a thriving Facebook community for women that strives to empower females from all walks of life.

Many parents raising children in the present day are finding that traditionally defined parent-child roles are increasingly less effective. The modern-day child faces unprecedented external pressures, which makes it all the more important to feel connected to those around them. Actively rewarding your little ones for their strengths, modelling good behaviour, and focusing on open communication are the foundations of the positive parenting movement, a parenting approach whose central idea is to promote positive interactions. In this interview, I am joined by Mahvish Ahmed (who runs the blog Safarnamay) and her partner Faizan as we discuss what it means to be a positive parent, and how the positive parenting framework can help us form a healthy lifelong relationship with our child while still maintaining the parental hierarchy as a safety net for them.

To understand our present and build our future, we must first understand our familial past. Individuation from our family of origin is vital in connecting with our true Self and establishing a healthy connection with our family of origin. Trauma, addiction, and maladaptive patterns can be passed down through generations when family cycles are not broken. In this clip, I talk about the realignment and individuation in families.
