Humans, animals and plants rely on a safe, healthy supply of food and nutrients for proper growth and development. We get everything we need from the plants we eat or from the meat of animals that ate plants. Plants are factories that do all of the work to process the basic elements of life and make them available to us. To make plants grow faster, what you need to do is supply the elements that the plants need in readily available forms. Without Fertilizers, the plant simply cannot grow because it cannot make the pieces it needs. It’s like a car factory running out of steel or a road crew running out of asphalt. If any of the required nutrients are missing or hard to obtain from the soil, this will limit the growth rate for the plant. These nutrients are essential for the general health and vigor of all plants. Some specific growth factors are: stimulated root development, increased stalk and stem strength, improved flower formation and seed production, more uniform and earlier crop maturity, increased nitrogen N-fixing capacity of legumes, improvements in crop quality, and increased resistance to plant diseases.. Our products provide different essential nutrients to encourage plant growth and speeds up the process of chlorophyll. These products improve the quality of vegetables and fruits. Fertilizer is a kingpin in enhancing crop production. It is also a key to securing the food need of a country. No country has been able to increase agricultural productivity without expanding the use of chemical industry. Balanced fertilization means application of essential plant nutrients, particularly the major nutrients, N, P and K in optimum quantity through correct method and time of application in right proportion. The proper use of fertilizers on soils of low natural fertility makes it possible to grow a wider variety of crops. Widening the selection of crops can result in the use of more vigorous, efficient and valuable cropping systems. The net result of the liberal use of fertilizers is greater efficiency in the utilization of land, labour and water. The main objective of the Department of Fertilizers is to ensure adequate and timely availability of fertilizers for maximising agricultural production in the country and for this purpose to promote and assist industries in the fertilizers sector, as also plan and arrange import and distribution of fertilizers.
2. The main activities of this Department in relation to the industry are overall sectoral planning and the development and regulation of the industry under the Industries (Development and Regulations) Act, 1951 and the broad industrial policy of the Government as well as monitoring of production, pricing and distribution of the output. The activities of this Department also include the administrative control of the public sector and co-operative undertakings in these areas.
3. The Department of Fertilizers is a Department under the Ministry of Chemicals & Fertilizers under the overall charge of a Minister of State (Independent Charge). A Secretary to the Government is the administrative head of the Department and is assisted by two Joint Secretaries and one Technical Advisor. A Financial Advisor of the rank of Joint Secretary advises the Secretary in financial matters. He heads the Finance Division and Accounts Wing of the Department.
4. There is one attached office under this Department, viz, the office of the Executive Director, Fertilizer Industry Co-ordination Committee (FICC). This office provides the Secretariat support to the Fertilizer Industry Co-ordination Committee constituted to administer the Retention Price Scheme for Nitrogenous Fertilizers and various incentive schemes to augment indigenous production of Fertilizers.
