Wishing a very happy to all those celebrating, especially in 🇵🇰! During this special time of the year, many families cannot get together due to & its restrictions. 2021, however, brings hope of a vaccine & possibility of a normal life. Till then, celebrate safely!
پاکستان اور دنیا بھر میں #کرسمس منانے والوں کو اس تہوار کی بہت بہت مبارکباد! اس سال کورونا اور سے پیدا ہونے والی صورتحال کی وجہ سے بہت سے خاندان کرسمس کے موقع پر اکھٹے نہیں ہوسکیں گے۔ تاہم 2021 میں ویکسین کی دستیابی اور زندگی معمول پر آنے کا امکان ہم سب کے لئے امید کی ایک کرن ہے۔ تب تک، خوشیاں ضرور منائیں مگر احتیاطی تدابیر کو مد نظر رکھتے ہوئے۔ کرسمس مبارک!

“I was born and raised in Germany🇩🇪️. I got married in 2010, and in 2017 I and my husband decided to move to Pakistan🇵🇰️ with our two beautiful daughters. However, it was a real struggle down the line. I felt very foreign living in Karachi. In 🇩🇪️, we have a knack to work and not sit idle. My family and friends suggested I start giving lessons in German. I already had an interest in teaching so I decided to give it a shot. Ever since, I have taught many children, high school students and adults, both online and in small physical groups. I must say that it has been an amazing experience! Teaching German to Pakistanis has not just helped me remain connected to my German roots but I have also learned so much about 🇵🇰️ through the students I teach,” writes Komal Arsalan to us as part of our 🇵🇰️🇩🇪️ campaign!

Dr. Muhammad Usman Rashid is a Senior Research Scientist at the Shaukat Khanum Memorial Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (SKMCH&RC) in Lahore, where he helped establish Pakistan’s 🇵🇰️ first state-of-the-art Cancer Research Department. He is an alumni of one of Germany’s 🇩🇪️ leading cancer research centers: the Deutsches Krebsforschungszentrum (DKFZ), where he did his PhD and post-doctoral, and continues to work as a guest scientist.

“I owe my success in biological and cancer research to because that is where I got the best scientific work support, an environment that fuelled creativity, and opportunities for national and international collaborations. With the expertise that I gained there and with the input from my German mentor, I was able to transfer technology from DKFZ to 🇵🇰️ to help set up the Cancer Research Department at SKMCH&RC – the first of its kind in the country. I’ve also expanded on the collaborations with my alma mater by arranging regular student exchange programs, scientific visits and working on joint publications,” he writes in his message to us.

Dr. Usman is also a recipient of the prestigious European Young Investigator Award, a WHO fellowship in Geneva 🇨🇭, and a national gold medal award for his research contributions to science. His important work in 🇵🇰️ as well as 🇩🇪️ is a promising example of the amazing Pak-German dosti and its great potential!

Dr. Asifa Akhtar, a molecular biologist at the Max Planck Society, has been selected to receive Germany’s most prestigious research funding award: the Leibniz Prize! The award recognizes her groundbreaking cell-biological work on the mechanisms of epigenetic gene regulation, and is accompanied with €2.5 million in prize money.
Dr. Asifa, who was born in Karachi, is currently serving as the vice president of the biology & medicine section of Max Planck Society – the first international female to do so. She is among 10 scientists to have been selected for this important prize for 2021, which will be awarded in a virtual ceremony next year.
Congratulations, Dr. Asifa! You make both Pakistan and Germany extremely proud with your outstanding contributions to science!
