Dr. Asifa Akhtar, a molecular biologist at the Max Planck Society, has been selected to receive Germany’s most prestigious research funding award: the Leibniz Prize! The award recognizes her groundbreaking cell-biological work on the mechanisms of epigenetic gene regulation, and is accompanied with €2.5 million in prize money.
Dr. Asifa, who was born in Karachi, is currently serving as the vice president of the biology & medicine section of Max Planck Society – the first international female to do so. She is among 10 scientists to have been selected for this important prize for 2021, which will be awarded in a virtual ceremony next year.
