Japanese auto makers have fallen behind the smart car curve, compared to their Western counterparts. TIME correspondent Kevin Kelleher reports that it will take 5-10 years for Japan to catch up with the likes of Tesla and Google. But Honda's latest concept vehicle, the NeuV, caught the reporter's attention for a different reason.
The smart car's AI doesn't focus on autonomous driving, accident prevention, or location services. Instead, Honda has installed an "emotion engine", powered by Softbank's robotics division, “to perceive the emotions of the driver and to engage in dialogue based on the vehicle’s own emotions.”
In other words, NeuV's AI focuses on being a personality that interacts with the driver's emotions, using various physiological cues. This approach to AI is apparent in other Japanese robotics projects like Softbank's Pepper robot, PARO the robot seal, Smiby the baby robot, and Kirobo Mini, a 4-inch interactive android from fellow carmaker Toyota.
Which type of AI would you prefer to see in your car?
