The difference between operating a business and leading one often comes down to the questions being asked.

Revenue, growth, and activity are important indicators, but they rarely tell the full story on their own.

Strategic leaders look beyond the surface numbers. They ask where revenue is coming from, how sustainable growth is, and whether the structure behind the business can support what comes next.

The right questions often reveal where attention, adjustment, and strategy are most needed.

Some things are bigger than business.

Good Friday is a reminder that the most important things in life were never on a spreadsheet. Faith is at the core of Advising Puerto Rico — it’s what moves us to show up fully, do the work with integrity, and care deeply about the people we serve.

Faith and business were never opposites. Belief doesn’t replace the work, it fuels it.

We have the greatest example of sacrifice and love in God, and everything we are flows from that.

Wishing you all a blessed Good Friday. ✝️

Delays happen.

But when delays become normal, something else is going on.

A client called me after months of missing reports and unanswered questions.

There was always a reason.
And at first, it was handled with empathy.

But eventually, the question changed:

What is happening in the business while all of this is going on?

It wasn’t a big charge that raised the alarm.
It was a small one… that no one recognized.

And that’s exactly how these things pass.

In growing businesses, it’s easy to focus on what’s coming in and overlook what’s quietly going out.

Until it adds up.

I was listening to an ex-FBI agent explain something that stuck with me:

Every profession has a “problem child.”

One person who doesn’t know what they’re doing.
Or worse, knows just enough to sound confident.

And when things go wrong, it rarely stays isolated.

It turns into: “This doesn’t work.”

I see this happen in business all the time.

One bad experience, and suddenly every future hire is filtered through that lens.

Numbers reveal patterns, performance, and potential risks.

Strategy is what translates that information into decisions that shape your business.

If you’re looking at your numbers but aren’t sure what decisions they should be guiding, it may be time to bring in the right advisory support.

Many founders take pride in being the center of their business.

Clients trust them. Decisions run through them. Everything works because they’re there.

But from a valuation perspective, that creates an important distinction:
Personal goodwill vs. enterprise goodwill.

And the market does not value them the same way.

I speak with founders every day who have built impressive businesses over the years.

Yet many are still running their operations the same way they did on day one.

Processes that once made sense often stay in place long after the business has grown.

Growth changes the demands on a business.

Taking the time to revisit the structure behind it helps ensure it can support where you are today and where you’re going next. ✈️

Sometimes the structure doesn’t need to change.
Just who’s allowed inside it.

This week’s newsletter started with a moment in front of the Royal Palace in Madrid and turned into a bigger conversation about how businesses inherit rules they never revisit.

The full story (and cafecito takeaway) went out in today’s newsletter ☕️ link in bio

We value long-term partnerships, and this is one of them.

Jeff Banman, CEO of Fairway CFO, is a CEO Compass client.

Jeff didn’t come to us because he didn’t understand finance. He built a strong corporate career. He knows the numbers. What was new was building his own firm.

Going from corporate leadership to entrepreneurship requires structure, decision-making discipline, and a clear growth path. That’s where we’ve worked together.

Through CEO Compass, we’ve helped translate vision into ex*****on, strengthen financial strategy, refine operations, and build a business designed for long-term value.

Jeff, thank you for trusting Advising Puerto Rico with your next chapter.
