Myth: No Sun = No Solar Power ❌
Fact: Solar Panels work with daylight, not heat ✅
The fact is, when the sky is cloudy, light still reaches the solar panels; this is called diffuse irradiation. Solar panels generate less electricity when it is cloudy, but they still generate some. While significantly more is produced on sunny days, bad weather does not stop generation entirely.
Heat reduces the panel's electrical voltage. Since Power = Voltage × Current, cooler temperatures allow solar panels to produce more electricity. That’s why product quality matters! Top-tier products withstand extreme heat better and limit these losses.
Cloudy conditions spread sunlight more evenly, which smooths out power production. The outcome is fewer extreme peaks and drops, leading to less thermal and electrical stress on solar system components. High-quality products can handle peaks and drops without issues, but it’s still beneficial to give the equipment some rest once in a while.
To bridge a power outage, you need a backup system with batteries and an inverter that can operate in ‘island mode’. In this configuration, the system can disconnect itself from the grid and use the stored energy to power the household. However, such systems are more complex and require careful planning and installation.
Solar panels are cleaned naturally with rain if the panels are installed with a tilt of at least 15° to 35° — optimal cleaning conditions. This doesn’t replace regular maintenance, but it helps, preparing the system for Portugal’s nearly 300 sunny days.
