💙 One region. Many realities.

Praia de Monte Clérigo, on Portugal's wild Costa Vicentina, was just voted Europe's Best Beach 2026 by European Best Destinations 🏆🌊

This year, Monte Clérigo claimed the top spot ahead of beaches in Greece, which took second and third place in the ranking 🇵🇹

And honestly? I can see why.

As Travel com (c)alma, this is one of my favourite beaches to recommend for a day trip in the Algarve. While many visitors head to the busier southern coastline, Monte Clérigo offers a completely different side of the region: dramatic Atlantic scenery, a more relaxed atmosphere and that unmistakable West Coast feeling.

What makes it even better is that the beach is just one part of a fantastic day out. Nearby you'll find spectacular viewpoints, beautiful stretches of the Rota Vicentina, charming Aljezur, and some of my absolute favourite beach restaurants in Portugal.

This is exactly the kind of place I love including in personalised itineraries: not because it's hidden, but because it gives travellers a deeper and more authentic experience of the Algarve.

If you asked me to show you a different side of the Algarve, this would be one of the places I'd recommend.

Praia de Monte Clérigo has just been voted Europe's Best Beach 2026, and it's easy to understand why 🏆

Wild, beautiful, relaxed and surrounded by some of my favourite spots along Portugal's Costa Vicentina.

Have you visited Monte Clérigo yet?

Jacaranda season in Lagos might honestly be one of my favorite times of the year in the Algarve ☀
The old town just feels different somehow.

Stays com (c)alma 💙
— Quinta de São Tomé, Évora

These are exactly the kinds of stays I love exploring and recommending.

What used to be an old quinta was slowly restored piece by piece by Rui himself — and you can feel that care and attention to detail everywhere.

The rooms all carry the names of local plants and are decorated around their theme.
Alfazema, the studio we stayed in, came with a well-equipped kitchen and plenty of space for a small family.

There’s the lovingly prepared breakfast every morning, including a pancake bar, the pool bar currently being brought back to life for summer, cozy common areas with a fireplace for the colder months and curated recommendations for Évora and the surrounding region that felt genuinely personal instead of standard tourist tips.

But more than anything, it’s the warmth of a host who makes people feel welcome from the very first moment.

And while Quinta de São Tomé is located just 2 km from the center of Évora, it feels incredibly peaceful at night — with nothing but nightingales and little owls in the background.

Very much com (c)alma approved for trips to the Alentejo and Évora.

Portugal com (c)alma 💙
— Burgau Edition

Summer has already arrived this week in Southern Portugal.

And Burgau is exactly the kind of place many people dream about when they think of the Algarve:
whitewashed houses, blue doors and shutters, tiny streets leading down to the ocean and water that looks almost Caribbean… just with much colder temperatures. 😄

Yes, Burgau is definitely a holiday town.
But one that, in my opinion, still welcomes people with warmth, charm and a relaxed atmosphere instead of feeling overly commercial.

The beach is also surprisingly protected, even on those typical windy Barlavento days — which makes it a favorite for both visitors and locals.

For me, Burgau captures what many locals and visitors are longing for in summer:
ocean air, long lunches, sea views, salty skin and days that feel beautifully uncomplicated.

One region. Many realities. 💙

Burgau feels like someone took every Algarve daydream and turned it into a real place:
whitewashed houses, blue doors and shutters, tiny streets leading down to the ocean and water that honestly looks almost Caribbean… just with significantly colder temperatures. 😄

Yes, tourism is definitely part of Burgau.
It’s a classic holiday town.
But somehow it still feels warm, relaxed and genuinely welcoming instead of overdone.

Everything here seems designed for slow vacation days:
cafés with sea views, good restaurants, a few carefully selected little shops, the sound of the ocean everywhere — all in a size that still feels manageable and calm, especially outside peak season.

And another thing that makes Burgau special:
the bay is surprisingly protected, even on those typical Barlavento days when the northern wind dominates the coast.

For me, Burgau is one of those places that perfectly captures this feeling of longing for summer, simplicity and ocean air.
A place where both locals and visitors simply enjoy being by the sea.

Just a beautiful little spot for perfect holiday days. 🌊

I truly love the Cinque Terre.
Honestly, it’s one of those magical landscapes in Italy that everyone should see at least once.

But one thing I never really understood?
Why so many people insist on staying directly inside one of the five villages.

Yes, if you have an unlimited budget, you can absolutely find some beautiful places to stay there.
But at the end of the day, Cinque Terre is still one of Italy’s most visited destinations — especially popular with international tourists.

Which means:
from April until the end of October, it gets crowded, expensive, and even day trips need a bit of planning if you actually want to enjoy the area.

That’s exactly why I personally love places like Bonassola and Levanto as a base instead.

Both are beautifully located right next to the Cinque Terre and perfect for exploring the region more slowly and comfortably.

Bonassola is smaller, calmer and more relaxed.
Levanto has more restaurants, more accommodation options and can feel quite lively during summer.

And honestly?
Choosing the right base can completely change how a trip feels.

That’s also why personalized travel planning can make such a difference — especially in regions that look simple on social media, but become overwhelming very quickly once you’re actually there.

I wrote a full blog post about it here:

As much as I love Portugal’s dreamy coastal towns, beautiful beaches and historic cities… posts like this honestly feel even more important to me 🇵🇹

Because moments like these say so much more about Portugal than any perfect postcard scenery ever could.

One of the things deeply rooted in Portuguese culture is this beautiful mix of simplicity, nature and family connection.

On sunny weekends, public barbecue and picnic areas all across the country fill up with local families and groups of friends spending entire afternoons together.

People bring charcoal, grilled fish or meat, salads, bread, snacks, drinks and enough food to feed half the neighborhood.

Children run around between tables and playgrounds.
Someone is always laughing somewhere.
Stories are being told.
Wine glasses are clinking while the sun slowly moves through the trees.

And what I personally love most:
even though these are public picnic spots in nature, people still make them feel special.

It’s not just paper plates and plastic cups.
Many families bring proper tablecloths, real dishes and even wine glasses — because food should look beautiful too.

Most of these places are surrounded by nature and often equipped with public grills, tables, walking trails, playgrounds or even river beaches like in this case.

And despite everything feeling lively and full, people somehow always make space.
Grills get shared.
Nobody seems to be in a hurry.

Just good food, conversations, laughter and long afternoons outdoors with family and friends.

To me, this is the Portugal truly worth discovering.

Not just beaches. Traditions.

Have you ever shared moments like these while traveling?
