Recycled polyester or organic cotton. Neither one is the sustainable choice.

Cotton drinks water. Polyester barely does. Polyester sheds plastic microfibres in every wash. Cotton does not.

Most recycled polyester comes from drinks bottles, which means it leaves a working bottle-to-bottle loop and enters a garment that has nowhere good to go afterwards. And polyester lasts longer, which matters more than the rest, because a garment worn twice as long halves everything about it.

Four dimensions, no winner. Whichever you pick, you are choosing which problem you are willing to own.

The honest position is to say which trade you made and why. Brands get into trouble not by choosing a fibre but by claiming the choice was free.

The Digital Product Passport is not mandatory next year.

ESPR has been in force since 2024 and textiles are a named priority. But the textile delegated act, which is the document that actually defines what a passport has to contain, has not been adopted. Without it there is nothing to comply with.

The 2027 date everyone repeats belongs to batteries. The battery passport becomes mandatory on 18 February 2027 and it is the first DPP of any kind. It is not your date.

For textiles the act is indicatively expected in 2027, and the act itself will set a transition of at least 18 months. That puts realistic compliance in 2028 or 2029. Anyone quoting you a firm day is guessing.

Meanwhile one piece is already live and gets almost no attention. Since 19 July 2026, large companies may not destroy unsold textiles and footwear.

Build against the standards, not the rumour. The technical standards published in 2026, and the data a passport will want is fibre, origin and chain of custody. You should be collecting that from suppliers regardless.

GOTS fabric is not a GOTS garment.

The certificate covers organic fibre content, the chemistry and water used in wet processing, and labour conditions at certified sites. It does not cover land use or yield, it does not cover the energy or the freight, and it says nothing about labour at any site that is not certified.

Here is the part that catches brands out. Certification travels with the chain, not with the cloth. If your fabric is certified and your maker is not, you cannot sell the garment as GOTS. You bought a certified input and ended up with an uncertified product.

One uncertified step and the claim is gone. Check the maker before you buy the fabric, not after.

I drove one hour to look at one seam.

The client is in another country and had approved the sample from photographs.
Photographs show colour and shape. They do not show tension, they do not show how a seam sits after pressing, and they do not show what happens when the same operation is repeated four hundred times instead of once.

So somebody has to stand in the room. That is not a premium service. That is the minimum condition for producing abroad and getting back what you approved.

Most brands find this out in the third season, after two have gone wrong.

Knit and woven barely overlap.
They are not two options on a menu. They are two industries with different machines, different companies, and in most cases different towns.
Woven is made on a loom, gets its stretch from how you cut it, and its minimum from the length of the weaving run. Knit is made on a knitting machine, gets its stretch from the loop, and its minimum from the yarn dye lot.
Almost no factory in Portugal does both well. Ask a knitter to make a tailored jacket, or a woven maker to handle a rib collar, and you will get their worst work rather than their best. That is not a quality problem. It is the wrong building.

Most founders pick the factory first.
It feels like the big decision, so it goes first. It is actually the last one that should be made.
Pick the factory first and you inherit their mills. They quote what they can buy easily, so your fabric options narrowed before you ever saw them. You inherit their minimums, because the MOQ comes from the mill and was never negotiable in that room. And you inherit their calendar, because their fabric lead time quietly became your delivery date.
None of that is bad faith. It is just what happens when the last decision gets made first.

Flat, twill, canvas, poplin.
Two of those are weaves and two are fabric names, and mixing them is how a brief stops being an instruction.
Plain and twill are structures. Plain is one over, one under, flat and stable and it shows every mark. Twill floats diagonally, so it drapes better and hides more.
Satin floats longer still, smooth on the face and quick to snag.
Basket pairs the yarns, softer and less stable.
Canvas and poplin are not structures.
Both are plain weave. Canvas is heavy with coarse yarns. Poplin is fine with a rib running across the width. Same crossing, different everything else.
A factory can act on three things: the weave, the weight in grams per square metre, and the yarn.
A fabric name is shorthand between two people who already agree what it means. Between you and a mill you have never worked with, it is a guess with your money behind it.

You are managing a factory you have never stood inside.

From your desk, production looks like a thread of emails and a shared spreadsheet. Everything reads as fine, because everything you receive was written by someone who wants it to read as fine.

The reality is 2,000 kilometres away. It is a cutting table, a machine that broke on Tuesday, a fabric roll that arrived two metres short, a sample that was approved by someone who never held it. None of that travels well. What travels is the summary, and the summary is always cleaner than the room.

Distance does not slow production. It slows information. By the time a problem reaches your inbox it has already cost you weeks, and the decision that caused it is long gone.

You do not need to move to Portugal. You need someone here who sees what your screen cannot, and tells you before it becomes a date you can no longer change.

They told you it ships this week. I was standing there. It ships in two.

There is a version of your order that lives in email, and a version that lives on the factory floor. Most of the time they match. When they don’t, you find out too late, usually the week you promised stock to your own clients.

An update is written by someone who wants the update to be good. The floor does not care how it sounds. The cutting was not finished. The trims arrived short. A machine that should have run yesterday ran today. None of that reaches you until it becomes a date you can no longer move.

This is the whole reason a local pair of eyes exists. Not to catch anyone lying. Most delays are not lies, they are optimism repeated up a chain until it reaches you as a promise. Someone standing in the room turns that promise back into a fact, while there is still time to plan around it.

A shipment date you can trust is worth more than a shipment date that sounds good.
