“BE CAREFUL GIVING FREE ADVICE TO CLIENTS!
Architects often give away advice for free for several reasons:
1. Attracting Clients
Free initial consultations help architects build relationships with potential clients. Offering insights upfront can show expertise and make the client more likely to hire them for a full project.
2. Industry Norm
Many professional services, including architecture, law, and consulting, offer preliminary advice at no cost. It’s a way to gauge project feasibility before committing to a formal contract.
3. Educating the Public
Some architects share free advice through blogs, social media, or events to educate people about design, sustainability, and regulations. This can improve the industry’s reputation and awareness.
4. Filtering Serious Clients
By giving some advice upfront, architects can assess whether a client is serious about moving forward with a project or just fishing for free work.
5. Networking & Word-of-Mouth
Offering helpful advice, even in casual conversations, can lead to referrals and future opportunities. Someone might not hire them immediately but could recommend them later.
6. Passion for Design (this old nugget)
Many architects genuinely enjoy discussing design and problem-solving. Sometimes, they share ideas because they’re passionate about improving spaces, even if it doesn’t lead to immediate business.
That said, while some advice is free, detailed plans, drawings, and project management always come at a cost. Architects know where to draw the line between generosity and paid work.
Note: Please check with your registration board and Professional Indemnity insurance before giving any FREE advice. Keep free to a MINIMUM. “
