The past couple of weeks have been challenging and we have had loads of questions sent to our DMs daily. The key inquiry had been centered on how we are approaching the foreseeable economic downturn

At this time, it's imperative that we retrace our steps , make informed and strategic decisions to move forward

CAR FREE DAYS 🚗🛑

11.) Every month, there are mandatory national community clean up days in Rwanda referred to as "Umuganda" Everyone participates in this and takes responsibility for their immediate environment. This happens every last saturday of the month. Whatever happened to the Monthly Environmental Sanitation in Nigeria 💭?

12.) For one day, every month, Rwanda’s capital Kigali is a CAR FREE DAY. This encourages exercises and the government/ sponsors provide free healthcare check up for participants
_
The initiative was launched by the government in 2016 to cut emissions and keep Rwandans moving towards a healthier lifestyle. Without cars or buses, residents are encouraged to walk or ride bicycles. There is also a full time car-free zone in the city i.e no cars allowed in that zone all year round
_
Yesterday was a CAR FREE DAY. I had a flight to catch but certain drivers are permitted such as airport drivers, medical personnel and the likes. I didnt take pictures but I here are some stock photos. In some of the photos, you can see the Rwandan president Paul Kagame actively involved

NO PLASTIC BAGS ALLOWED 🚫

9.) Rwanda is one of the cleanest African countries. The roads are very clean and the AirBnB I lodged at was quite spotless!
_
10.) According to my airport taxi driver "Happy", the government achieved this by placing a strict a NO PLASTIC BAG rule.
The ban on non-biodegradable polythene bags was placed in 2008 and that has done a whole lot of good for the country
_
If caught carrying illegal plastic bags, you are likely to be fined, jailed or forced to make public confessions. Jail time can be as long as six months.
_
When you go shopping, your items are placed in a paper bag. That way even if trashed, it can be absorbed by the soil unike polythene/plastic bags. Plastic bags,which take hundreds of years to degrade, are a major global issue, blamed for clogging oceans, drainage issues and killing marine life.
_
The entrepreneur in me got curious and upon research, I discovered that the paper bag industry in Rwanda is quite huge and entrepreneurs who keyed into the ban like Janvier Ndayirata in Rwanda first image) and Andrew Mupuya in Uganda (second image) are making fortunes 💲💲💲and building empires from thier paper manufacturing plants

Tommy Hilfiger started his company in 1980 designing premium clothing, fragrances, footwear, accessories and home furnishing. He sold the company for $1.6 million dollars in 2006 but retained his position as lead designer.

This is him over a decade later still marketing and engaging with prospective customers. Big ups!
