🦍 Why Does Rwanda Name Every Baby Gorilla Each Year? | Kwita Izina 🇷🇼
Every year, Rwanda celebrates Kwita Izina, the Baby Gorilla Naming Ceremony, a unique conservation event inspired by the traditional Rwandan custom of naming newborn babies.
Held annually—usually in September—the ceremony gives every mountain gorilla born during the previous year a unique name. Each name reflects the gorilla’s personality, behavior, or the conservation story surrounding its family.
But Kwita Izina is much more than a celebration. It raises global awareness about mountain gorilla conservation, recognizes the dedication of park rangers, researchers, veterinarians, and local communities, and promotes sustainable tourism that helps protect these endangered animals and their habitat.
The modern Kwita Izina ceremony was officially launched by the Rwanda Development Board (RDB) in 2005, inspired by Rwanda’s cultural tradition of naming newborn children. Since then, it has become an internationally recognized conservation event.
