When planning a lift, the first question is often:

โ€œHow much does it weigh?โ€

But for abnormal or irregular loads, another question can be just as important:

โ€œHow is that weight distributed?โ€

A load with an unusual shape can behave very differently from a compact, evenly balanced load of the same weight.

๐Ÿ” WHAT MAKES SHAPE IMPORTANT?

๐Ÿ”น Offset Center of Gravity โ€” the CoG may not be at the geometric center.

๐Ÿ”น Uneven Weight Distribution โ€” one end may be significantly heavier than the other.

๐Ÿ”น Large or Irregular Surfaces โ€” wind can create additional forces during lifting.

๐Ÿ”น Multiple Lifting Points โ€” unequal loading can develop between slings or lifting points.

๐Ÿ”น Flexible or Articulated Loads โ€” sections can shift or move once the load leaves the ground.

๐Ÿ›‘ WHY CAN THIS BECOME DANGEROUS?

An abnormal load may tilt, rotate, swing or shift unexpectedly during the lift.

That can change sling tensions, alter the load's orientation and bring the load or rigging closer to surrounding structures and personnel.

๐Ÿ’ก THE KEY LESSON

A lifting plan should account for more than the load's total weight.

Before lifting, consider the shape, dimensions, CoG, lifting points, rigging configuration, wind exposure and how the load may behave once suspended.

Same weight does not mean same lifting risk.

At TIMES UNITED, we support safer lifting operations through third-party inspections, risk assessments, testing, training, and certification.

A load can be perfectly rigged, the slings can be certified, and the crane can be operating correctly yet the load can still tilt, rotate or become unstable during lifting.

The reason often comes down to one critical factor:

Where the lifting force acts in relation to the loadโ€™s Center of Gravity (CoG).

๐Ÿ” WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE LIFT?

๐Ÿ”น Center of Gravity โ€” the point where the loadโ€™s weight effectively acts downward.

๐Ÿ”น Center of Lift โ€” the effective point or line where the lifting forces act upward.

๐Ÿ”น When they don't align โ€” the load can develop a turning moment, causing it to rotate or tilt until the forces reach a new balance.

๐Ÿ›‘ WHY DOES IT MATTER?

Uneven weight distribution, incorrect sling positioning, unequal sling lengths, or lifting from unsuitable points can shift the relationship between the CoG and lifting forces.

This can lead to:

โš ๏ธ Unexpected load rotation
โš ๏ธ Sudden sling loading
โš ๏ธ Load instability
โš ๏ธ Shock loading
โš ๏ธ Contact with nearby structures or personnel

๐Ÿ’ก THE KEY LESSON

A load doesn't always lift in the orientation you expect.

Before the main lift, understand the loadโ€™s weight distribution, CoG, lifting points and rigging arrangement and consider a controlled trial lift where appropriate.

Know where the weight is. Know where the lifting force acts.

That understanding can make the difference between a controlled lift and an unexpected rotation.

At TIMES UNITED, we support safer lifting operations through third-party inspections, risk assessments, testing, training, and certification.

A multi-leg sling can look perfectly balanced while the load is actually being carried by only one or two legs.

When the loadโ€™s centre of gravity is offset, lifting points are at different heights, or sling angles are unequal, the tension in each leg can vary significantly.

๐Ÿ” What makes unequal loading dangerous?
Uneven tension can overload individual sling legs.
A leg may carry far more than its apparent share of the load.
Low sling angles can dramatically increase leg tension.
An off-centre load can shift suddenly during lifting.
Assuming โ€œ4 legs = 25% load per legโ€ can lead to incorrect WLL calculations.
Overloaded components can fail without obvious warning.
๐Ÿ—๏ธ Before the lift, verify:

โœ” Centre of gravity
โœ” Load weight and configuration
โœ” Sling angles
โœ” Load-sharing between legs
โœ” WLL of the sling assembly and components
โœ” Lifting-point capacity and condition

Key lesson: A four-leg sling does not automatically mean four equally loaded legs.

Safe lifting starts with understanding how the load will actually behave not how it looks on paper.

๐Ÿ“Œ Inspect. Calculate. Balance. Lift.

A sling can be certified.
A shackle can be inspected.
A crane can be in excellent condition.

And the lift can still be unsafe.

Why?

Because safe lifting depends not only on the condition of the equipment, but also on how it is selected, connected, positioned, and used.

๐Ÿ” WHERE CAN HUMAN ERROR ENTER?

๐Ÿ”น Wrong lifting accessory โ€” selecting equipment unsuitable for the load or lifting configuration.

๐Ÿ”น Incorrect connection โ€” improper sling angles, hitch configuration, or shackle assembly.

๐Ÿ”น Unbalanced load โ€” failing to identify the load's center of gravity.

๐Ÿ”น Side loading โ€” applying forces to components outside their intended loading direction.

๐Ÿ”น Poor communication โ€” unclear signals between the rigger, signaler, and operator.

๐Ÿ”น Skipping the lift plan โ€” relying on experience instead of assessing the actual conditions.

๐Ÿ›‘ THE CRITICAL POINT

Inspection tells you whether the equipment is in acceptable condition.

It does not automatically confirm that the lifting method is safe.

A perfectly maintained sling can still be overloaded.
A new shackle can still be side-loaded.
A certified crane can still be operated with an unsafe lifting plan.

๐Ÿ’ก THE KEY LESSON

Safe equipment + unsafe method = unsafe lift.

Competency, planning, communication and correct rigging practices are just as important as equipment condition.

At TIMES UNITED, we support safer lifting operations through third-party inspections, risk assessments, testing, training, and certification.

A wire rope can look intact at first glance until the strands begin to separate and flare outward.

This condition is known as birdcaging, and it is a serious warning that the rope's internal structure has been disturbed.

๐Ÿ” WHY DOES BIRDCAGING HAPPEN?

๐Ÿ”น Sudden shock loading can cause the strands to shift and deform.

๐Ÿ”น Incorrect handling or installation can disturb the rope's internal balance.

๐Ÿ”น Improper reeving or incompatibility with sheaves and drums can create abnormal stresses.

๐Ÿ”น Excessive torque or rotation can cause the strands to untwist and open.

๐Ÿ”น Overloading can accelerate internal deformation and damage.

๐Ÿ›‘ WHEN SHOULD IT BE REJECTED?

Birdcaging is not simply a cosmetic defect.

If the rope shows significant strand separation, permanent deformation, core exposure, severe distortion, or other conditions outside the applicable discard criteria, it should be removed from service and evaluated by a competent person.

Never try to straighten or "work out" a severely birdcaged rope and return it to lifting service.

๐Ÿ’ก THE KEY LESSON

A wire rope can still have visible metal and still be unsafe to lift with.

The shape of the rope can reveal what happened inside its structure.

A shackle may still look usable but a change in its original shape can be a serious warning sign.

Deformation can indicate overloading, side loading, impact, excessive force, or improper use. The shackle may have experienced stresses it was never designed to withstand.

๐Ÿ” WHAT SHOULD AN INSPECTOR LOOK FOR?

๐Ÿ”น Bent or distorted bow โ€” may indicate overload or side loading.

๐Ÿ”น Deformed pin or pin holes โ€” can affect proper engagement and load transfer.

๐Ÿ”น Widening or spreading โ€” a change from the original geometry is a critical warning.

๐Ÿ”น Twisting โ€” may indicate an off-axis loading condition.

๐Ÿ”น Cracks, gouges or excessive wear โ€” can further reduce load-bearing capacity.

๐Ÿ›‘ DON'T JUDGE BY APPEARANCE ALONE

Compare the shackle with its original manufacturer specifications and condition.

A deformed shackle should not simply be straightened and returned to service. Remove it from service and have it evaluated according to the applicable requirements.

๐Ÿ’ก THE KEY LESSON

When a load-bearing component changes shape, it is telling you that something has already gone wrong.

For lifting equipment, deformation isn't just cosmetic damage it can be evidence of overload or compromised integrity.

At TIMES UNITED, we support safer lifting operations through third-party inspections, testing, risk assessments, training, and certification.

Not every asset carries the same level of risk.

A minor equipment issue may cause inconvenience or downtime.
A failure of a safety-critical asset can cause injuries, fatalities, major damage, or a serious operational shutdown.

Thatโ€™s why inspection priorities should be based on risk not simply on equipment age or inspection schedules.

๐Ÿ” WHAT MAKES AN ASSET โ€œCRITICALโ€?

๐Ÿ”น Potential Consequence โ€” What happens if it fails?

๐Ÿ”น Failure Probability โ€” How likely is the equipment to fail?

๐Ÿ”น Safety-Critical Function โ€” Does it protect people or prevent a hazardous event?

๐Ÿ”น Operating Conditions โ€” Is it exposed to heavy loads, heat, corrosion, chemicals, vibration, or demanding cycles?

๐Ÿ”น Failure History โ€” Are defects, breakdowns, or recurring issues already being observed?

๐Ÿ›‘ HIGHER CRITICALITY = HIGHER ATTENTION

Cranes, lifting accessories, MEWPs, pressure equipment, emergency systems, and other safety-critical assets may require more rigorous inspection, testing, monitoring, and maintenance controls depending on their application and risk profile.

๐Ÿ’ก THE KEY LESSON

The equipment that can cause the greatest consequence deserves the greatest attention.

Effective asset management isn't about inspecting everything equally.

It's about identifying what matters most and controlling the highest risks first.

At TIMES UNITED, we support asset integrity through third-party inspections, risk assessments, testing, training, and certification.

When equipment is inspected by someone independent of the operation, the objective is simple:

Verify not assume.

Third-party inspection provides an impartial assessment of equipment condition, safety-critical components, compliance, and suitability for use.

WHY INDEPENDENCE MATTERS

๐Ÿ”น Objective Assessment โ€” Findings are based on inspection evidence, not operational pressure.

๐Ÿ”น Safety-Critical Defects Identified โ€” Independent inspectors can identify issues that may be overlooked during routine checks.

๐Ÿ”น Compliance Verification โ€” Inspection can verify equipment against applicable standards, regulations, manufacturer requirements, and defined acceptance criteria.

๐Ÿ”น Documented Confidence โ€” Inspection reports and certificates provide traceable evidence of the equipment's condition at the time of inspection.

โš ๏ธ THE KEY LESSON

An internal check asks: โ€œDoes the equipment appear ready?โ€

An independent inspection asks: โ€œCan we verify that it is safe and fit for its intended use?โ€

Independent verification doesn't replace daily inspections or maintenance.

It adds another layer of assurance.

At TIMES UNITED, we provide independent third-party inspections, risk assessments, testing, training, and certification to support safer equipment and workplace operations.

A weld may look acceptable from the outside while a critical defect is developing where you cannot see it.

For lifting equipment, structures, pressure systems, and other safety-critical components, weld integrity can directly affect structural reliability.

๐Ÿ” WHAT SHOULD INSPECTORS LOOK FOR?

๐Ÿ”น Cracks โ€” especially around high-stress areas and weld toes.
๐Ÿ”น Porosity โ€” gas pockets that can reduce weld quality.
๐Ÿ”น Lack of fusion โ€” incomplete bonding between the weld and base material.
๐Ÿ”น Undercut โ€” a groove at the weld toe that can create a stress concentration.
๐Ÿ”น Distortion & deformation โ€” may indicate excessive heat input or welding issues.
๐Ÿ”น Surface damage & corrosion โ€” can accelerate deterioration around the welded area.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ VISUAL INSPECTION IS ONLY THE START

Depending on the application, weld integrity may require NDT methods such as Magnetic Particle Testing (MT), Liquid Penetrant Testing (PT), Ultrasonic Testing (UT), or Radiographic Testing (RT).

The appropriate method depends on the material, weld configuration, defect type, accessibility, and applicable requirements.

๐Ÿ›‘ THE KEY LESSON

A weld is not safe simply because it looks good.

Good inspection identifies defects before they develop into loss of structural integrity or failure.

At TIMES UNITED, we support equipment and structural safety through inspection, NDT, testing, risk assessment, training, and certification.

Equipment can survive one hot day.

The bigger concern is what happens when thermal exposure is repeated day after day, cycle after cycle.

High temperatures can gradually affect materials, fluids, seals, electrical components, and structural integrity.

๐Ÿ” WHAT REPEATED HEAT CAN DO

๐ŸŒก๏ธ Material Fatigue
Repeated heating and cooling can create thermal stresses and contribute to cracking or distortion.

๐Ÿ›ข๏ธ Fluid & Lubricant Degradation
Excessive heat can accelerate deterioration of oils, hydraulic fluids and lubricants, reducing their protective performance.

๐Ÿ”ง Seal & Hose Damage
Heat can harden, soften or degrade elastomers, increasing the risk of leaks and component failure.

โšก Electrical & Electronic Stress
High temperatures can accelerate ageing of insulation, wiring and electronic components.

๐Ÿ—๏ธ Structural Effects
Repeated thermal cycles can contribute to expansion, contraction and progressive deterioration in vulnerable components.

โš ๏ธ THE HIDDEN RISK

Thermal damage is often progressive rather than immediate.

Equipment may continue operating while its safety margin is gradually being reduced.

๐Ÿ› ๏ธ THE KEY LESSON

Don't inspect equipment only after it fails. Inspect it for what repeated heat exposure may be doing to it.

Consider operating temperature, exposure duration, cooling performance, maintenance history and the condition of heat-sensitive components.

Heat doesn't always cause failure today sometimes it prepares the equipment to fail tomorrow.

At TIMES UNITED, we support equipment safety through inspections, risk assessments, testing, training, and certification.
