When planning a lift, the first question is often:
โHow much does it weigh?โ
But for abnormal or irregular loads, another question can be just as important:
โHow is that weight distributed?โ
A load with an unusual shape can behave very differently from a compact, evenly balanced load of the same weight.
๐ WHAT MAKES SHAPE IMPORTANT?
๐น Offset Center of Gravity โ the CoG may not be at the geometric center.
๐น Uneven Weight Distribution โ one end may be significantly heavier than the other.
๐น Large or Irregular Surfaces โ wind can create additional forces during lifting.
๐น Multiple Lifting Points โ unequal loading can develop between slings or lifting points.
๐น Flexible or Articulated Loads โ sections can shift or move once the load leaves the ground.
๐ WHY CAN THIS BECOME DANGEROUS?
An abnormal load may tilt, rotate, swing or shift unexpectedly during the lift.
That can change sling tensions, alter the load's orientation and bring the load or rigging closer to surrounding structures and personnel.
๐ก THE KEY LESSON
A lifting plan should account for more than the load's total weight.
Before lifting, consider the shape, dimensions, CoG, lifting points, rigging configuration, wind exposure and how the load may behave once suspended.
Same weight does not mean same lifting risk.
