New IACS Requirements Enhance Safety for Watertight Cable Transits

In October 2020, IACS introduced new and updated requirements (UR Z28, Z23 and Z17) aimed at improving safety on board ships and offshore installations. These rules apply to contracts signed on or after 1 July 2021 and introduce clearer expectations for the installation, inspection and documentation of watertight cable transits.

➡️ UR Z28 – New Requirement
Covers the entire lifecycle of cable transits: installation, maintenance, quality verification and periodic inspections. All activities must be documented and traceable.
➡️ UR Z23 (rev. 7) – Updated Requirement
Requires a complete register of all cable transits during newbuild projects, including identification, type approvals, installation drawings and documented condition after final inspection.
➡️ UR Z17 – Service Suppliers
Installation and inspection must be performed by approved and quality-assured service suppliers.
