Earlier this April, Nicolas Baldeyrou made his debut with the Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Masato Tadaaki Otaka, in two concerts at Tokyo Metropolitan Theatre Concert Hall.

What made these performances especially touching was that shared the stage with one of his very first students, Fuminori Haga, a member of the orchestra’s clarinet section.

For the encore, Nicolas prepared a special arrangement from Bizet’s Carmen for three clarinets, and performed it together with Fuminori Haga and Yomiuri’s solo clarinet, Taira Kaneko.

Today, on 2 April, marks the anniversary of the premiere of Beethoven’s Septet in E-flat major, Op. 20, first performed in 1800 at the Burgtheater in Vienna.

To celebrate the occasion, we are looking back at these photos from 24 January, when Nicolas Baldeyrou performed this remarkable piece at the Philharmonie de Paris as part of La Musikfest, alongside an outstanding group of artists.

A beautiful way to spend the day: listen to podcast for France Musique on the role of the clarinet in Beethoven’s music.
