Sea. Sailing. Superpower.

What’s your superpower(s)?

I define a superpower as a strength of yours that you do effortlessly and that strength benefits others.

Amongst my superpowers, one of them is the ability to be fully present regardless of my body condition.

Had a fall recently which hurt my back and knee.

But I had committed to facilitating a session for a group of leaders in town for a regional meeting.

Plus I enjoy sailing and think it will do wonders for my body too.

Yup, the team session was on board one of Ximula Sail’s comfortable catamarans at the ONE15 Marina.

To successfully facilitate the session yesterday while recognizing the pain, here’s what I did:

Buy a walking stick - initially I was resistant to the idea as it made me feel old. But using it will allow me to walk with less discomfort so reframing was needed. The orthopedic surgeon highly recommend less pressure on the knee.

Ask for help - I approached our fave hotel W Singapore - Sentosa Cove to arrange a buggy to minimize walking to where the catamaran was docked. Unfortunately they could not pick me up after the event. Mentally steeled myself for the walk back to hotel.

Be vulnerable - instead of pretending to be super fine, I openly shared with the leaders about my recent fall and how I may need to sit as and when needed. They were empathetic and understanding (bodes well for their teams!)

Celebrate success - while I may not have been as nimble as usual, I know that I delivered B’s standard as usual. Because a number of the leaders came up to thank me. They also shared how they like my style and flair for facilitating the session. That’s positive feedback.

Understanding Partners - I so enjoyed being on Ximula’s sunset cruises that we decided to collaborate to provide the Sailors In Sync programme for corporate teams. The team was so accommodating to my condition for example, helping me to distribute the materials etc. And they were brilliant in facilitating their segment of the programme. We certainly demonstrated a team in sync.

Only complaints.

We are known to complain more than compliment.

Not just as customers.

But perhaps also as leaders.

I remember an example where I left a review on Facebook about a cafe.

Upon my return visit, I asked the supervisor if the management gave him the feedback.

To that, he replied: "only feedback complaints; not compliments."

When I showed him the post, where I share my compliments about him on the cafe's page, his face lit up!

As a manager, do you only share complaints or do you highlight compliments too?

By sharing compliments, you affirm the great work and efforts of your people.

Because that works wonders for staff morale and engagement too!

You Need This Employee

Chatted with an employee who related her recent experience of being able to hit the targeted daily sales figure for her outlet.

She shared how towards the end of the day, when they were still a few hundreds short of the figure, she was anxious.

Then hopeful when two customers stood outside the outlet.

She chatted with them and was elated when they decided to have a meal there.

The reality is that it is the responsibility of her company to spearhead the marketing campaign to drive traffic to the store.

Once the customers are there, then it is the service team's role to provide service excellence and convert sales.

Her story tugged my heartstrings.

She's an example of an employee who value creates.

She is concerned for the financial well-being of her company.

As business owners and leaders, such an employee:

🌞 is an example of who must be on our team.
🌟 is who we must duly recognize and reward.
🤩 needs to be supported to thrive and flourish.

When I am holiday, I get real excited when I see Singapore 🇸🇬! Yes, even Singapore Noodles on the menu. 😂

On a wander in a shop yesterday, saw a hanging chair that looks like the one I used to have on my balcony. Now being enjoyed by my parents.

Was so excited that I told all the service staff I met that I’m from Singapore and how awesome the chair bears my country’s name.

Yup, I am a happy proud brand ambassador for Singapore. 🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬🇸🇬

Always a joy being back at my go to and fave hotel W Singapore - Sentosa Cove.

Here’s some reasons why the hotel is my fave:

🌟 Quality - from the environment to the team to the food even the smell of the hotel, it’s classy and exudes quality.
🌟 Service - Haven’t been back for a year and how nice to be greeted with warm smiles. The brilliant service is across all departments and functions. From the restaurants to front desk to housekeeping. Even the Yoga instructor recognized me from a year ago when I attended one session. There’s also a dedicated position called the W Insider.
🌟 Attentiveness - even during peak period, the service team at The Kitchen Table do their utmost best to serve the guests with their trademark service.
🌟 Responsiveness - if any feedback or suggestions are given, the team is quick to respond.
🌟 Oneness - when I complimented a team member Eric from the Kitchen Table, he was also quick to praise his fellow colleagues. That’s so nice. I’ve also had the opportunity to interact with the GM who is on the ground himself welcoming guests. The hotel has many true brand ambassadors that live up to its reputation.

In midst of transformative change, and some might add turmoil, one of the best things organisations can do is to facilitate purposeful conversations.

Instead of shying away from difficult topics or sweeping it under the rug, open the space for dialogue to happen.

Doing this reaps benefits such as:

When designing sessions be it for business culture blueprint analysis and design or team synergy sessions, I encourage leaders to include a segment to address the elephant in the room.

Gone are the days when companies can afford to sweep issues or demotivaters under the carpet. What’s not surfaced often escalates into needless dramas.

Instead, a well designed segment with thoughtful questions and creation of a psychologically safe space for conversations to flourish, it bodes well for growth and learnings to happen.

Looking forward to facilitating such a conversation in a few weeks’ time. Glad the leader recognizes that having passion and persistence alone does not = success. She wants to surface what’s also not working well so that the team can address them.

“While our team could execute the deliverables over a period of time, it will be in our interests to engage your team to accelerate the process and also ensure that we’ve leverage on what’s useful for our continued growth. With you/ your team’s guidance and expertise, we can focus on business building and operations.”

That was the GM’s sharing when we first met him for a chat to explore how we could best support him and his team.

Fast forward 5 months’ later, the company now has:

🌟 Comprehensive Gap Analysis and Recommendations based on conversations held with their leadership team and employees. We facilitated both 1-1 conversations as well as Focus Group Discussions. We received positive feedback on the pulse conversations as it provided participants with an opportunity to share their feedback, input and suggestions. The sharing and responses from participants were open, candid with lots of valuable insights. Management can use the insights gleaned from the reports to dive deeper for strategy development including employee development and retention.

🌟 Development of Employee Value Proposition and Strategic Narrative. The EVP ensures that the HR policies and employee engagement plans are aligned.

🌟 Development and Documentation of Comprehensive HR Policy Manual. The mandate was that the policies are aligned to MOM and also to take care of employees’ wellbeing, easy to understand and robust for increase in manpower.

🌟 Development and Documentation of Employee Handbook that is easy to understand, means something to the employees and also reflects the essence of the company that cares for its employees.

🌟 Development of Onboarding Programme that was engaging, interactive and accelerate the employees’ integration into the culture and operations.

Besides the agreed deliverables, we also supported the client to:

🌟 Articulate and Document their Vision, Mission and Values.
🌟 Enhance their Organisation Chart to show clear reporting, communication and decision-making autonomy.
🌟 Develop more comprehensive Job Descriptions.
🌟Develop an Employee Experience Map with touchpoints to create a wow experience for the employees.

Throughout the consulting project, we also consistently provided the client’s team useful articles and references to further enhance their capabilities.

And as the GM predicted, while we were journeying with the HR leader to complete all of the above deliverables, the company was busy winning new business contracts.

Building a positive performance culture isn’t just about organising outings or sending employees for workshops. Every single aspect of the business is part of it.
