Personal data refers to data about an individual who can be identified from that data, or from that data and other information to which the organisation has or is likely to have access.

What is the PDPA?

The Personal Data Protection Act (PDPA) provides a baseline standard of protection for personal data in Singapore. It complements sector-specific legislative and regulatory frameworks such as the Banking Act and Insurance Act.

Has your organisation appointed and trained a Data Protection Officer/Officers (“DPO/DPOs”)?

Recent initiatives launched by the PDPC include advertisements and letters to individual Singapore registered companies highlighting the requirement to appoint a DPO.

For the first time, the Personal Data Protection Commission (“PDPC”) has taken enforcement actions against 11 organisations for breaching the Personal Data Protection Act (“PDPA”) since the law took effect in July 2014. Please click on the Straits Times Article below for the full story.

Four organisations were served with fines ranging from $5,000 to S50,000, while seven others were issued warnings or directions for failing to protect the personal data of consumers by failing to put in place adequate security measures. K Box Entertainment Group was given the heaviest fine of $50,000, for leaking the name, contact number and residential address of 317,000 customers. Under the PDPA, organisations that fail to protect consumers’ personal data can be fined up to $1 million per breach.

Hackers were taking advantage as more people turn to digital tools to get work done but had set-ups that were poorly secured.

"Many organisations implemented ad hoc systems," said Mr Dan.

For instance, firms with employees working from home might not have secured their Internet connections with virtual private network solutions.
