Adding power smoothing to handle artificial intelligence (AI) workloads raises a valid question: does it shorten the life of your batteries and generators?

Vertiv tested this rigorously. Over 300 hours of endurance testing, the Vertiv™ PowerUPS 9000 delivered AI load smoothing at a 20% setting while connected to both lithium-ion and nickel-zinc battery strings. Battery life impact was negligible. The smoothing feature engaged only at the onset of fluctuations, not continuously. Baudouin's post-test generator disassembly confirmed all components were within standard tolerances. Power smoothing does not come at the expense of asset longevity.

Sizing coolant distribution units (CDUs) to 90% utilization leaves no room for growth. Targeting 60% to 70% utilization during initial deployment lets operators add racks incrementally without needing additional CDU capacity immediately.

Most data center operators assume that adapting power infrastructure for AI workloads requires significant capital investment. Testing tells a different story. When graphics processing unit (GPU) loads pushed a 2.4 MW diesel generator to instability, a 20% power smoothing setting on the Vertiv™ PowerUPS 9000 was enough to restore stable frequency and voltage output.

The UPS uses battery capacitance to absorb transient current peaks before they reach the generator. After 300 hours of validation, the impact on battery life was negligible, and all generator components remained within standard tolerances.
