Today, on World Olive Tree Day we celebrate the timeless olive tree — a symbol of peace, resilience, and nourishment for millennia. From ancient groves to tables around the world, the olive tree provides not only healthy oils, delicious fruit, and natural beauty products, but also contributes to a more sustainable planet.

Olive groves act as effective carbon sinks, support biodiversity, and thrive in dry climates with relatively low water needs, making them one of the world’s most environmentally friendly agricultural systems.

Here’s to the tree that connects cultures, supports communities, and stands as one of the nature’s most enduring gifts.

Our favorite time of year here on the grove in Aotearoa/New Zealand as the olives ripen under the brilliant autumn sun. With a good mix of degrees of ripeness, we’ll do our first harvest this Wednesday, the Barnea and Manzanilla olives, leaving the Frantoio on the trees to ripen a little longer. Hopefully a dry day… Stay tuned for photos & updates!

Celebrating World Olive Day with reflections of our time with the Olive Tree this year both on our grove in New Zealand and in our recent travels in Spain. Wherever we travel, seeing an Olive Tree always brings us joy and a sense of peace.

The Olive Tree has become central to our lives as caretakers of a family of trees in Aotearoa New Zealand but also as we help consumers in Singapore discover EVOO from around the world.

So, today we pause to celebrate the Olive Tree’s enduring role in culture, history, and the environment. And especially during this Thanksgiving week, reflect and be thankful for the gifts this remarkable tree provides.

Look for .nz and on the shelves or join us for a tasting workshop (DM us for details). Photos (our own): Martinborough, NZ (1 & 2), Cacabelos, España (3 & 4)

A late post to put a wrap on the 2024 harvest (part 2!) here We kept our Italian varietal, the Frantoio on the trees a bit longer to ripen and harvested them with mechanical rakes and nets. Always a physical and enjoyable day especially with hard working friends under beautiful, crisp winter skies. Overall 2024 will go down as a difficult year here, with only half of the volume of fruit and generally lower oil yields. But the oil we did press tastes amazing. As with everything in nature there are good and bad seasons and even in the difficult years there are always things to celebrate and give hope for the year ahead.

Olive Harvest 2024 (part 1)! Grateful for a beautiful autumn day in our corner of Aotearoa for picking our Barnea olives yesterday. This is the earliest date we’ve picked in our 8 years of harvesting here. Two shakers (and one slow forklift operator… me) made quick work of 220 trees. The Frantoio olives, which still need time to ripen, will be mechanically raked in another few weeks. Special thanks to Helen & John .nz for another fascinating year of olive growing adventures!

Spa week for the trees! It’s been a busy couple of weeks back here on the grove in Aotearoa. After a hot, dry summer the trees needed a little tidy up as we head into Autumn and soon, harvest season. Treatment for our trees these couple of weeks involved w**d trimming and ‘sucker’ removal. Both of these activities are done one tree at a time, so it gives us ample one on one time to get reacquainted with the trees and admire the developing fruit.

With this festive season upon us we want to wish you all a joyous holiday season.

As we reflect on the past year, we are grateful for the opportunities we’ve had to share our knowledge and experiences with you here or in person at one of our tasting workshops in Singapore. 💚We love baking with extra virgin olive oil. Yes, because it’s healthier and also because the EVOO itself is a flavourful ingredient that can make the whole bake extra yummy. EVOO is way more than just a butter substitute!

🌲 Holiday flavours like in gingerbreads or pumpkin spices work well with robust, spicy styles of EVOO with a medium bitterness. Examples of olive oil varietals we like that would work well are: Hojiblanca, Nocellara del Belice, Koroneiki.
