As organizations seek innovative ways to foster collaboration, strategic planning, and team building, the importance of quality facilitation during offsite meetings cannot be overstated.

Five ways an external facilitator can transform ๐™ฎ๐™ค๐™ช๐™ง offsite to ensure alignment, productivity, and results.

1๏ธโƒฃ ๐‚๐ฅ๐š๐ซ๐ข๐ญ๐ฒ ๐จ๐Ÿ ๐๐ฎ๐ซ๐ฉ๐จ๐ฌ๐ž: A skilled facilitator helps define clear objectives for the offsite, ensuring that every participant understands the goals and how their contributions fit into the bigger picture.

Facilitators help distill key takeaways and action items, ensuring that the momentum generated during the offsite is carried forward into the day-to-day operations.

It's a question that's often overlooked but holds the key to unlocking the power of your team.

Offsite meetings can be transformative, but only when approached strategically. The traditional approach, with activities like bowling or ropes courses, can be fun but often lacks a significant impact on team dynamics and results.

Consider this: What if you could transform your #๐จ๐Ÿ๐Ÿ๐ฌ๐ข๐ญ๐ž meetings from mere team-building exercises into catalysts for real growth and collaboration? The answer lies in understanding that quality collaboration starts with individual motivation. Team members need to be clear about their own objectives and feel a sense of ownership.

#๐‚๐จ๐ฅ๐ฅ๐š๐›๐จ๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐จ๐ง shouldn't be vague; it should be specific and compelling. Ask, 'Why is collaboration essential to achieving our business results?' To ensure ongoing progress, build collaborative commitments into individual performance objectives, setting clear expectations for team behaviors.

In a results-oriented paradigm, it's not just about trust; it's about motivated team members connecting their efforts to personal success and tangible results. Expert input can significantly impact the achievement of your business goals.
So, why not seek professional guidance to plan and execute your offsite meetings?

At BME, we know that leadership matters in shaping the purpose, direction, and outcomes of your next offsite.

Let's start a conversation and see how we can help your offsite become more than just another fun day out.

As I reflect on the word celebration, a memory of my recent birthday came to mind. I remember spending most of the day at home working on some tasks that required thought, attempting to avoid the eggs and flour (a fun Indonesian tradition) that might have been waiting for me at the office. Although I survived my actual birthday, a friend organized an ambush surprise when I finally went to work the next day. I can honestly say that I never saw it coming.

Prior to that ambush, some colleagues surprised me upon my arrival with a beautiful and delicious birthday cake. In all these moments, I, along with those around me chose to or were forced to take a bit of time out of our day to celebrate.

Celebrations brings joy, even the messy ones. Because when we celebrate, we acknowledge that we are grateful for what is occurring in our lives. Here are a few ways to celebrate that I experienced and you can do these things with others this week:

1. Leave a note - A colleague surprised me with a little card and a piece of cake on my desk. Leaving a small gift shows a person that you are thinking of them.
2. Send a text/email - I received a number of texts, emails, facebook posts, and other forms of communication. Each one was a moment to celebrate a relationship with a special person in my life.
3. Have fun together - Whether that is by enjoying a meal, watching a movie, or playing futsalโ€ฆwhen you spend time with others, it's a way to celebrate life and enjoy all that you have been blessed with (health, friendships, etc).

We don't always have to wait for a big event to celebrate. Take time and be thankful for the smallest things and find ways to celebrate with others this week. For my family, a simple trip to the mini-market to grab an ice cream is a great way to celebrate a long and difficult day.

Reflection: How will you celebrate this week?

There is something about that word that I like. When I am able to look back at a week and see the progress we have made, itโ€™s truly fulfilling. The following are highlights from a week of much progress.

Progress in Projects - The business is getting closer and closer to breaking ground on a new resort. We have set in place systems that will increase productivity. Decisions were made and many more are to come, but itโ€™s getting closer. Many thanks to the tireless efforts of the team.

Progress with Partners - This past week BME Services was granted a nice executive coaching contract with a new client. These partnerships generally start small and grow as we serve our clients well.

Progress with People Development - By kicking off a pilot project with our staff, we were able to pour into the very people who bless us by their efforts. As I watched our team interact with the content, I was impressed with our relevant the principles and practices are in our daily work. I look forward to seeing how everyone implements what they are learning about connecting and communication.

Progress with Personal Goals - This past week, I was able to read a new book on leading a cohesive company. Although most of the concepts I am familiar with, I went away with a deeper understanding of how all the components of a company are connected and how to strengthen the links between vision, culture, operations, etc.

We should all be grateful for the ability to grow and progress in our relationship with others and with the world around us.

I love metrics, because they help us measure progress. However, there are times when it is better that we donโ€™t count. Iโ€™ve been reminded of this from my good friends in recent days.

When is it better not to count?

1) When we are helping others - When we help someone out, do it without expecting anything in return. Whether you are helping them by giving money or giving your time, do it out of love. If you expect something in return, youโ€™ll lose the blessing that comes from giving with a cheerful heart.

2) When you are quick to compare - If you are like me, there are times in your life when itโ€™s just easy to judge others or see everything that someone else is not doing. When we begin to compare ourselves to one another, there tends to be unhealthy competition that develops. Sometimes, we also tend to not know the whole picture. It is our foremost duty to complete our work as responsible individuals, not worrying if it is fair or not.

I have been deeply encouraged these past few days to see our team come together despite some being sick. I am grateful for a team that does everything with a cheerful heart, even if it is on a last minute notice. This week be careful not to fall prey to โ€œcountingโ€ things that shouldnโ€™t be counted.

๐–๐จ๐ซ๐ค๐ข๐ง๐  ๐‡๐š๐ซ๐
Over the past twenty years of running resorts, I've had the privilege of working physically hard with my team, especially when we are launching something new. Usually at the end of these long days/periods, I am physically tired but there is a genuine joy when I look back and see what we accomplished.

I remember once when we were opening a new kitchen at our resort. We should have taken a before and after shot, but we forgot and jumped right into cleaning. After 6 rounds on the floor and 2 rounds on the walls, we were satisfied with how everything looked.

The funny thing is, we knew that the kitchen was going to get dirty again before everything was moved in and operational, but it will be a lot easier to clean the next time around. A deep clean is just the start - it takes consistent work to keep things clean.

This principal of doing the deep clean and then keeping things clean consistently can be applied to all aspects of our work. If you're developing a new product, or creating a new system, or being trained on your job for the first time, it takes a lot of hard work. Hopefully, the hard work will be rewarding, but you can't stop there. Things will get messed up. You'll need to go back to the drawing board. You'll need to keep improving your system.

Consistent work doesn't always seem important but it is necessary in order to keep everything running smoothly.

Reflection Question: What project or task do you need to work hard at to get it ready? What project or task do you need to go back and improve?

๐“๐ž๐š๐ฆ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค
Recently, we had a team of four in central Java looking over furniture decisions for our resort. At first, I wondered if we had too many people, but in the end it seemed like the groups various talents and strengths mixed well. We had a team member who brought a ton of knowledge and experience with furniture making. He ensured that we're getting strong and well-made furniture from quality material. Another added her insights into the design and look. She is making sure everything is going to go well together. Another member, larger in size was present and he could test out the furniture (especially chairs and tables) to fit the sizes of many of our Western guests. I'm convinced if he wasn't there we probably would have messed up on the size of the dining room table. I had the joy of listening to all their inputs, adding a few clarifying questions and then making some final decisions as a group.

At the end of that same week, my business partner (Eric) and I delivered a training for a client. This was a new training for us on creating new habits. Just like any new training, we were a bit nervous about the activities, schedule, and if what we thought will work would actually work. The neat thing about this training was that it was put together largely by our content creation team, even though they weren't going to deliver it. Eric and I looked it over a bit and gave some input here and there, but they largely created the schedule, activities, and most of the content. The training was a big success with a lot of good comments and action items from the group.

When you work as a team you can accomplish much more than working individually. Although I always had this principle at the back of my head, it was great to be reminded of it this week and to see it in action. I believe when we work well together we bring joy to those around us.

๐๐ž๐ซ๐ฌ๐ž๐ฏ๐ž๐ซ๐š๐ง๐œ๐ž
A few weeks ago, I had a week of ups and downs. It started out great with a very productive Monday and ended great on Thursday and Friday, but the in between was a bit of a drag for me emotionally. I am wondering why that was the case and how I can fight through those moments of slow movement. As I reflect back, here are some of the lessons I am learning:

Rhythm - I have certain periods of the day that I am more productive than other periods, and certain days that are more productive as well. As I look at these periods of time that are productive, I find that my workday and workweek has a certain rhythm that if followed makes everything more fun and productive. For me, itโ€™s best to do thinking/creative work first thing in the morning or early in the week and leave meetings with people for times after lunch. Tuesdays to Thursdays are great days for travel and visiting clients or the team.

Variety - I like variety, if I am in the office too much or doing the same thing for too long... I begin to struggle with staying on task. The more tasks and more variety, the more exciting for me.

Ooching - I donโ€™t like to wait and would always need to feel like things are moving forward. A book that I read recently called this process of moving forward as โ€œoochingโ€. Too often we try to figure everything out before we start, when in reality we need to just do a little and make changes along the way. I like to ooch. For me, it looks like act, learn, adapt (repeat cycle).

Reflection Question: What are the patterns and practices that you have noticed help increase perseverance through the week?

I knew going into this past week it was going to be a busy week with multiple trips lined up. I also knew that if I wasn't intentional with my time, I would fall behind in my work and responsibilities. I remembered a thought from a speaker in college who spoke about the importance of redeeming the time. The concept has always stuck with me and I believe it has been reflected in the past week through all my ways of redeeming time.

This week consisted of a lot of traveling. Traveling in planes, taxis (especially in Jakarta), and boats can take up many hours in our day. If we are not careful, we can end up wasting the time. By remembering to redeem the time, I was able to engage in work such as planning, reading, writing and responding to emails during my times of sitting and waiting to get from one place to another.

Redeeming my travel time allowed me to be more prepared for my encounters with people. I found myself not distracted and able to be fully present in each interaction. I felt blessed through my various engagements this week. As I look toward a new week, even though I won't be doing as much travel, I hope that I will continue to be intentional to redeem the time wherever I might be.

Reflection Question: How do you like to redeem your time?

What comes to mind when I mention WeWork? I watched a documentary earlier this week that overviewed the rise and fall of both the company and founder of WeWork. At the height of its success, it was a promising unicorn destined for greatness. But, success blinded their leadership, and they were not prepared to handle the challenges they would face, ultimately leading to a historic crash and a warning for others.

I havenโ€™t led a multibillion dollar company, but I do have a little experience with failing at success. My experience is a little more subtle, and probably something you can relate to. There are times when my progress or success led to blind spots that slowed learning and growth. At times I โ€œdrank my own Kool-aidโ€ and didnโ€™t see clearly. Other times complacency or a sense of entitlement tricked me into thinking that future success should come easy.
Like I said, subtle, but dangerous if left unchecked.

So how can we guard against this?

๐๐ซ๐š๐œ๐ญ๐ข๐œ๐ž ๐†๐ซ๐š๐ญ๐ข๐ญ๐ฎ๐๐ž - Gratitude helps me reset and recognize that my achievements and contributions are part of something greater than myself.. It reminds me that my success is not guaranteed and that even life itself is a far greater gift than the fleeting success I may be experiencing.

Life, health, strength, family, team, community and even adversity are all gifts. Taking time to recognise these gifts each day helps to keep me from the dangers of success.
