As we commemorate International Women's Day today (March 8th, 2024), we celebrate the progress made towards gender equality while recognising the challenges that still lie ahead. A groundbreaking new report from the World Bank Group reveals that "the global gender gap for women in the workplace is far wider than previously thought" and regretfully, โ€œno country provides equal opportunity for women - not even the wealthiest economies.โ€

This latest report also highlights the need for supportive frameworks to accelerate progress toward gender equality, with Singapore ranking 64.2 (0-100) on the supportive frameworks score.

"This is not just unfair - itโ€™s wasteful. Increasing women's economic participation is the key to amplifying their voices and shaping decisions that affect them directly. Countries simply cannot afford to sideline half of their population.โ€ notes Tea Trumbic, the reportโ€™s lead author.

"Closing this gap could raise global gross domestic product by more than 20% โ€“ essentially doubling the global growth rate over the next decade," said Indermit Gill, Chief Economist of the World Bank Group and Senior Vice President for Development Economics. Yet, not enough is being done to ensure equal opportunities for women.

The strive for gender equality is far from over and requires the collective efforts of individuals, communities, governments, and organisations worldwide. The theme for International Womenโ€™s Day 2024 is "Invest in women: Accelerate progressโ€. Itโ€™s time for us to get involved in creating an environment where women have equal opportunities to thrive, lead, and succeed in every aspect of life.

This womenโ€™s day, consider investing in yourself or in someone whom you feel deserves an opportunity to be accelerated in their professional journey. Join our upcoming Women in Leadership Programs in May/June 2024. For more information, visit our website: https://lnkd.in/gDd4QaFV

๐Ÿ”ฎ FRIDAY ๐Ÿ”ฎ

As we conclude our week of exploring Cross-Cultural Competence, let's focus on the importance of patience, learning, and openness to different perspectives.

Understanding new cultures takes time and requires genuine openness and willingness to learn. Exposure to different cultures helps, but it needs the extra effort, learning and practice to develop cross-cultural competence. There are always more insights to discover, it is a life-long journey. According to our definition a person is cross-culturally competent when:

They are able to lead, communicate and collaborate across different cultures in an effective and harmonious way.

They feel comfortable in uncomfortable intercultural situations because they know theyโ€™ll figure out the culturally appropriate way to handle these situations.

As a global leader, how do you foster cultural learning in your organization?
