CUSTOMERS' experience is everything to businesses since it generates the goodwill that will bring about to continued consumption and support for the brand. Customers are the reason businesses stay in business. As we are in the people-business, our service equation involves the customers, job-seekers and labour intermediaries. We do not deal with the flow of any products but the flow of people to jobs - for people, by people. Customers' experience ranks high among many other competing priorities including reliability, responsibilities, and reliability.

Customers' dissatisfaction will necessitate immediate responsible and reliable service recovery. Businesses may be able to gain more customers with dependable service standards and quick, no-questions-asked service recovery. Such responsive and responsible service recovery may deepen customer relations and strengthen the brand position.

Giving good customer experience is the surest bet for businesses to retain the customers and win the competion.

I SEE two major area where Singapore is particularly environmentally unfriendly. It has been more than 12 years now since the BCA Green Mark Scheme was launched in January 20015 as an initiative to drive Singapore's construction industry towards more environmental awareness among developers, designers, and builders from project conceptualisation and design, as well as during construction. To date, even with our largest developer HDB, green buildings and flats are not a norm but a novelty.

With today's technology and location-based GPS, we still rely on paper coupons for time-based car parking charges, which is most environmentally unfriendly.

Notwithstanding the fact that Singapore hopes to be an environmentally friendly, energy independent Smart Nation, we still have plenty of gaps to fill to meet that aspiration.

WITH the proliferation of news channels and avenues online and offline, it is indeed hard these days to separate the wheat from the chaff, the real news from the fake. Legislating and criminalising the spread of fake news can bring a certain force to limit the flow of the falsehoods but will not altogether stamp them out. The origination of the fake news cannot be controlled but search engines and news aggregators can prevent them from multiplying and perpetuating. If these search engines and news aggregators can conduct a search and return authoritarian, fact-checked results, it would help the reader to make an informed judgment.

For businesses, falsehoods abound and are not likely to go away overnight. We just have to be more discerning through common sense and not just by the force of law.

BOARD diversity should not be contrived by means of legislation or mandate. Whether it should be 20 per cent, 30 per cent or even 50 per cent, it is still a arbitrary number. Gender specificity on boards may become unnatural if it is ruled with mandate rather rather on merit.

Boards should not seen either as matriarchal or patriarchal, male dominated or female dominated but be filled by members who can add value to the board with diversity of views that is beneficial to shareholders' interests.

Board composition should be governed by who best serves the broad shareholders and represents minority interests, and that role should not be gender-specific.

Female participation on corporate boards and even in government is increasing today. Let the growth of those numbers be natural, where the best person rises to the occasion, whether man or woman.

CASHLESS transactions with electronic payments will become the main transaction mode. It is about unifying the platform and making the process seamless and painless.

ActiveSG is an app developed for Singaporean to book sports facilities, and because of its popularity, it has signed up close to 1.2 million Singaporeans with e-wallets tagged to personalized SingPass. Imagine, these 1.2 million e-wallets being used for public transport, public services, at hawker centres and even retail merchants.

It will not be too long before this cashless payment mode becomes an instant hit because ActiveSG has already developed that momentum.

The tweaks to the property cooling measures have little impact on buying sentiment and are unlikely to boost transaction activities in the near mid-term. The lifting of the TDSR for mortgage loans with loan-to-value ration of 50 per cent and below effectively still fences off the marginal and speculative investors as the government is still cautions about the bubbling effect these speculative investors can bring to the market.
In short, this interim adjustment to the market curbs is to help sellers dispose of their investments sooner, and/or with a smaller to spur buying because the ABSD remains untouched.
The stay of ABSD means that buying may still curtailed. The market is sill tepid and the tweaks have not moved the needle much.

CHILDCARE leave and support for working parents are only tactical strategies and options in light of our more serious ageing demographics problem. Our low fertility rate, housing provisions for young families who need a roof to start a family, and increasing resources for nursery and kindergarten amenities are other factors in the big issue of promoting population growth.
From a HR perspective, the enhanced leave measures show a pro-family government going all the way to provide support for young families. In today’s context, it is almost a norm as well as a financial necessity to have both parents working. The government’s pro-family initiatives are a positive step forward that hopefully will be emulated by the private sector. But the latter would need government support, as such initiatives will impact businesses’ bottom lines.
