There was a lot of curiosity in the room at the CYDP x INSPIRIT Sustainability Marketplace on 29 August.

The first gathering for the CYDP 2026 cohort brought together participants, C*C youth, INSPIRIT young professionals and other young people interested in climate and sustainability and the focus for this session was something increasingly hard to ignore: extreme heat.

We introduced the group to StayCool through games, temperature and humidity sensors, smartwatches that track heat and participants also learnt about ways to volunteer and get involved. A big thank you to Sophia Castro, one of our StayCool volunteers, for sharing her experience of volunteering and taking the time to answer participantsโ€™ questions about the initiative.

StayCool is a two-year community initiative supported by the SG Eco Fund, working to support 1,000 heat-vulnerable households through sensors, smart watches and app-based guidance, alongside community volunteers.

When people talk about climate change and rising temperatures, they usually focus on massive city infrastructure. But for most families, heat isn't an abstract urban planning problem but an immediate and difficult reality. It's a stuffy bedroom, zero airflow, or the afternoon sun beating straight through the window. Worse, many people don't even realise that their constant fatigue or stubborn headaches are actually caused by sitting in a hot room for too long.

This month, we were invited by the Naval Base Coast Residents' Network to speak about this at their Sustainability Day. While their regular sessions cover great practical habits like rescuing surplus food and cutting down food waste, our team introduced a different everyday angle: managing indoor heat.

We shared our recent community findings on how heat traps itself inside HDB flats and the hidden ways it stresses the body. Instead of offering complicated overhauls, we broke things down into simple, immediate adjustments residents can make right now: fixing airflow, smart timing for opening windows, setting up basic shading, and knowing the early physical warning signs of heat exhaustion.

Our initiative StayCool, brings younger and older residents together to build practical heat resilience in their homes and communities. A special thank you to our community volunteers, Ryan Ang, Acacia Ng and Jianyu(Richard) Liang. They were with us throughout the day, helping run the session and speaking with residents about their experiences with heat at home.

Thank you also to Mr. Shi Xuan Ng, Adviser to Sembawang GRC GROs (Naval Base), for gracing the event, and to the Naval Base Coast Residents' Network for inviting us to be part of the conversation.

"Is climate tech even for me? I'm a management student". Anirudh Mohan from Indian Institute of Management, Indore asked, before joining YDCT, Sustainable Living Lab (SL2) Group's youth climate tech program with founding sponsor, Meta Platforms.

Nine months later, he was on stage presenting a working prototype to real stakeholders, alongside cross-border teams from Indonesia, Singapore, and India.

Here's what that programme showed us across 600+ participants:
- Climate tech isn't just a science problem. It's a collaboration problem. A design problem.
- Management students belong in that room. So do engineers, social scientists, policy thinkers.
- 14+ hours of training, 11 industry mentors, real problem statements from real organisations where teams tackled extreme heat, air pollution, flooding, renewable energy. Not in a classroom. In practice.

Watch how Program Director Theresa Mindi Saguda broke down how we built this.

If you're working on youth development or climate programmes, this is for you.
