The Power of YET — The 3-Letter Career Catalyst
Continuing my sharing from the 4-series lecture I conducted for National University of Singapore (NUS) final-year Pharmacy students.

One of the most emotional moments in the classroom is discussing the "fear of failure." Whether it’s a residency application that didn't go through or a clinical assessment that didn't meet the mark, how we label these moments determines our future resilience.

Here is how we use one simple word to transform a professional "dead-end" into a "work-in-progress."
1: The Hook: The 3-Letter Word for Clinical Success.
2: The "What": Did you fail a mock exam or miss out on a competitive internship? In a high-stakes environment like pharmacy, we often treat "No" as a permanent verdict. But a "No" is rarely the end of the story—unless you let it be.
3: The "How": The secret is linguistic. Add "YET" to every "I can't."
"I can't master this oncology protocol... YET."
"I haven't secured my ideal hospital role... YET."
This simple addition keeps your brain in active learning mode instead of "shut-down mode."
4: The Call to Action: Failure is just data for your next attempt. Follow for Lesson 2: Passion & Purpose, where we align this mindset with your career goals.

What is one thing you haven’t mastered "YET"? Declaring it is the first step to conquering it.

Why Top Graduates Still Struggle (and How to Fix It) 💼
Grades are a baseline, not a finish line.

Every year, thousands of "straight-A" students enter the job market and struggle to find their footing. Why? Because the modern workforce values proof over prediction. If you want to stand out, you need to shift your focus from credentials to exposure. Here is the blueprint for a winning early-career strategy:

Internships are inmportant: Treat every internship as a 3-month job interview. It’s where your theoretical knowledge meets market reality. Build a Portfolio of Proof: Don't just tell employers what you can do—show them. Side projects and case studies speak louder than a GPA.

Strategic Networking: Don’t just look for jobs; look for mentors. Map out the people who are where you want to be and learn their "code."

Success doesn't start at graduation; it starts the moment you decide to build a strategy. Start today.

Are you in the wrong seat?

Most professionals aren't struggling from a lack of talent—they’re suffering from a lack of **alignment**. If you feel constantly drained at the end of the day, it might not be the workload; it’s likely that your daily tasks are fighting your natural "Professional DNA."

In the book *Limitless Possibilities*, we dive deep into the RIASEC Model (Holland Codes). This framework helps you identify your core strengths across six personality types, allowing you to stop fitting into a pre-made box and start building a career around your design.

What is your code?
* Realistic (The Doer): You thrive on hands-on work and tangible results. Examples:* Engineering, IT hardware, Logistics, or Skilled Trades.
* Investigative (The Strategist): You love analyzing data, research, and solving complex puzzles. Examples: Software Development, Data Science, or Financial Analysis.
* Artistic (The Creator): You value innovation, self-expression, and original ideas. Examples: Marketing, UI/UX Design, Writing, or Content Creation.
* Social (The Coach): You are driven by helping, teaching, and fostering connection. Examples: Human Resources, Teaching, Customer Success, or Coaching.
* Enterprising (The Leader): You thrive on influence, business development, and driving results. Examples: Sales, Entrepreneurship, Project Management, or Executive Leadership.
* Conventional (The Organizer): You find flow in structure, accuracy, and managing systems. Examples: Accounting, Operations, Quality Assurance, or Project Coordination.

Your Energy is Your Greatest Data Point.
If your current role feels like an uphill battle, you’re likely working against your code. By identifying your unique RIASEC combination, you can pivot toward work that naturally energizes you rather than depletes you.

Stop trying to fit in. Start standing out by playing to your natural strengths.

Stop waiting for a "spark" to strike. Start building the fire.

We’ve all heard the advice to "follow your passion," but that suggests passion is something sitting under a rock waiting to be found. The truth? Passion isn't a discovery—it’s a construction project.

If you’ve ever started a new hobby or career path only to feel the excitement fade when things got difficult, you haven't "lost your passion." You’ve simply hit the middle of the Bloom Model.

This framework changes how we view professional growth by breaking it into three essential stages:

1️⃣ Discovery (The Spark): This is the fun part. You follow your curiosity and explore the "new." It’s light, exciting, and full of potential.
2️⃣ Development (The Muscle): This is the "Danger Zone." To move from curiosity to passion, you must build competence. It requires grit, practice, and overcoming friction. Most people quit here because it feels like "work," assuming the passion is gone. In reality, this is just where the muscle is built.
3️⃣ Deepening (The Identity): After the grind comes the reward. The skill becomes part of who you are. This is where true passion and purpose reside.

The Takeaway: The "grind" isn't a sign that you’ve chosen the wrong path; it’s a sign that your interest is taking root. Don't abandon the build just because it requires effort. Your limitless possibilities are waiting on the other side of the Development phase.

Which stage of the Bloom Model are you navigating right now? Are you exploring, grinding, or deepening? Let’s discuss below.

Is a three-letter word missing from your curriculum?

"I don't understand this."

When a student says these words, the cognitive process often grinds to a halt. It’s a dead end—a fixed statement that closes the door on further effort. But as educators, we have the power to reopen it.

By introducing "YET," we transform that dead end into a journey. "I don't understand this YET" immediately shifts the brain's focus from a lack of ability to a search for strategy. It acknowledges the current struggle while guaranteeing future potential.

Ready to be a High-Impact Trainer? It starts with the language we use in the classroom.

Are we grading the destination or the journey?

In a world obsessed with final grades, we often forget that the "A" doesn't show the grit it took to get there. Fixed mindsets in the classroom kill curiosity and the will to experiment. To build resilient learners, we must model the Growth Mindset.

I’ve started sharing my own "learning curves" with my students—showing them that even experts struggle with new concepts. When we celebrate the process, we unlock potential.

Why your learners are dropping off (and how to stop it).

Big milestones are rare. If your curriculum only celebrates the finish line, you’re losing students in the "middle muddle."

The secret to learner retention isn't a flashier slide deck—it's the Progress Principle. Small wins are the daily fuel for student engagement. When learners feel they are moving forward, their motivation becomes self-sustaining.

How to implement this:
* Design courseware to elicit "small performances" early and often.
* Create a feedback loop that highlights micro-wins.
* Build "Action-Motivation" by showing progress in real-time.

Be the Master Educator. Shift your focus from the final grade to the incremental gain.

How do you gamify progress in your training programs? Let’s share ideas below. 👇

The 3-Letter Word That Hacks Your Success

The Concept: The Power of YET
In high-pressure fields like healthcare and leadership, we often mistake a temporary "No" for a permanent verdict. Whether it’s a missed internship, a failed certification, or a rejected proposal, how you label that moment determines your next move.

The Lesson Learnt:
"I can't" is a dead-end; it shuts down the brain's problem-solving centers. "Not YET" is a journey; it signals to your mind that the capability is attainable, just not currently present. This is the core of Neuro-plasticity—your brain is a muscle that strengthens through the struggle.

The Application:
Audit your internal dialogue today. Every time you catch yourself saying "I don't know how to do this," immediately append the word YET.

“I haven’t mastered this complex oncology protocol... YET.”

“I haven’t secured my ideal industry role... YET.”
This simple linguistic hack keeps you in Active Learning Mode and prevents "Fixed Mindset" paralysis.

What is one skill or goal you haven’t mastered "YET"? Declaring it is the first step to conquering it.

The next career skill you need to learn? How to drop the bad habits

Key takeaways from the article:
* Career growth is not only about learning more, but also unlearning outdated habits.
* Past success can become a constraint—what worked before may hinder current performance.
* Mid-career professionals often struggle not due to lack of ability, but due to entrenched routines and mindsets.
* Strengths, when overused, can turn into blind spots and create friction at work.
* Relevance today requires adaptability, openness to feedback, and behavioural shifts, not just new skills.
* Sustainable growth comes from replacing limiting habits with intentional new actions.

This article highlights a powerful truth—growth is not just accumulation, it is transformation. And transformation often begins with letting go.

In Limitless Possibilities, I emphasised that true personal and professional growth is anchored in the MPH Framework: Mindset, Passion & Purpose, and Habits. What the author experienced is fundamentally a mindset shift—from protection to openness, from perfection to progress.

Many mid-career professionals are not lacking capability. They are operating from outdated mental models that once served them well. This is where mindset becomes critical:

A fixed mindset protects reputation.

A growth mindset invites feedback and accelerates learning.

The example of withholding ideas until perfection reflects a habit shaped by past environments. But in today’s workplace, value is increasingly created through collaboration, iteration, and speed of learning—not just precision.

On Passion & Purpose, there is another layer. When individuals are anchored in purpose, they are less driven by fear of judgment and more by contribution. This shifts behaviour—from guarding ideas to sharing value.

Finally, Habits. This is where change becomes real. As highlighted, unlearning is not about stopping—it is about replacing. Small, repeated actions—like sharing early thoughts—gradually rewire behaviour and identity.

A practical reflection:
* Identify one habit that once drove your success.
* Ask: Is it still serving my current environment?
* Replace it with a behaviour aligned to today’s demands.

The concept of “lifelong letting go” is especially relevant in a fast-changing economy like Singapore. Skills may open doors, but mindset and habits determine how far we grow beyond them.

Ultimately, unlocking potential is not about becoming someone new. It is about removing what no longer serves who you can become.
