Hazy hot work at Tuas Basin today. Practical skill tests on site, and more candidates ready for New Zealand.
The photo is a reminder the construction industry is cyclical - it has boom times and slow times, these jackup rigs were being sold all over the world - now a big slowdown.
Same in New Zealand - there was a big demand for structural and pipe welders several years ago, as the urgent infrastructure projects were started after the Christchurch earthquake.
Then as buildings are completed, there is now more work in the regions, and still in Auckland, but this is for other trades.
For Keppel /Alpine welders, there is much less opportunity now - this is because there is simply not the demand for pipe welders there used to, and 3G / plate welding skills are not enough anymore.
We still place good welders with 4G flux and site capability, OR for aluminium and other workshop work.
Many candidates who have registered online are asking why they were not interviewed. We choose candidates 1. on their CV, with a match to NZ demand, then 2. English, then 3. workshop tested for practical skills.
With Staff solutions we have interviewed more than 130 candidates in the past 2 weeks – but these are for very specific roles that we can confidently get you permanent work with genuine NZ employers.
However the market has tightened up, and candidates need better English, and definitely a wider range of skills.
Most importantly - because the market is slower - you should *NEVER* pay for "Job Search" to an offshore agent - this is just bu****it.
Never pay upfront for an agent to go look for a job for you, no matter how super professionally it is signed and stamped. Fees upfront for "Job Search Agreements" is just a con to get your hard-earned money.
Not everyone is going to get an interview - but that is because we do not think you can keep a job in New Zealand - this is the reality of the job market there. It is better to save your money and keep or buy your house at home.
If you DO have the skills and there is a demand - then yes we can and will place you.
SkillSelect only charges a manpower fee after you have a job and your work visa is issued.
