How many of these Singlish words do you already know?

Shiok. Makan. Chope. Nasi Lemak. Atas. Paiseh. Sabo.

Some are about food, some are about social cues, and some only really make sense once you’ve spent time living in Singapore. That’s what makes Singlish so fun. It is not just vocabulary. It is culture, humour, place, and everyday life.

🧧🏮 Chinese New Year in Singapore | 2026

If this is your first Chinese New Year in Singapore, you’ll notice the celebrations begin well before the holiday itself. Streets turn red and gold, markets fill with mandarins and decorations, and families prepare for reunion dinners and visits that mark the start of the lunar year.

Chinese New Year follows the lunar calendar and each year is linked to an animal from the Chinese zodiac and one of five elements. 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse, beginning on 17 February.

The Horse is linked with movement, independence, and forward momentum. Combined with the Fire element, this year is often associated with energy, ambition, and transformation. It’s seen as a time for taking initiative, embracing change, and moving decisively toward goals, while being mindful of burnout and pacing.

In Singapore, Chinese New Year is a meaningful pause. Homes are refreshed, debts are settled where possible, and the new year begins with an emphasis on family, renewal, and future aspirations.

Whether you celebrate or simply observe, it’s a wonderful moment to understand the rhythms that shape life here and to feel part of the city as it steps into a new chapter.
Wishing you a strong and positive start to the Year of the Fire Horse 🔥🐎

Postcards from Tanglin / Orchard.
Where green escapes meet city polish, this neighbourhood blends nature, culture, and cosmopolitan living with ease.

The Singapore Botanic Gardens remain a favourite. From the iconic clock tower to lakeside paths, outdoor art, and families spending time together by Swan Lake, it’s one of the best places in the city to get outside, stay active, and slow down in nature.

At Dempsey, Open Farm Community is perfect for relaxed meals surrounded by greenery.
Pro tip: stop by Tiong Bahru Bakery’s Safari tent for a coffee and their cult green tea almond croissant.

Art is woven into everyday life here too. The St. Regis Singapore features striking outdoor sculptures and original Picasso works inside the Astor Bar.

When you’re ready for something more cosmopolitan, Orchard Road delivers. Shop at ION Orchard or Paragon, then pause for a moment at the Prada Café inside ION.

From rooftop pools and brunches to afternoon tea at the Singapore EDITION or a design led stay at Artyzen, Orchard continues to set the tone for modern city living.

Moving to Singapore and trying to figure out what life here really costs?💰

Some numbers may shock you, in a good way. A plate of chicken rice at a hawker centre can be as little as S$7, and public transport is cheap, fast, and reliable. Taxes are among the lowest in the world.

There are also costs that make headlines. Singapore consistently ranks as the most expensive city in the world. Rent is the highest globally, and owning a car comes with the eye-watering price of a COE (Certificate of Entitlement) on top of the car itself. School fees can also be a major factor for expat families. The top international schools here are among the best in the world, with fees to match. That said, there are also mid-range and budget school options available, too.

We have pulled together a clear, realistic breakdown of what expats actually spend, covering housing, groceries, dining, transport, childcare, schooling, health, lifestyle and entertainment. This will help you plan your budget with clarity and confidence before you arrive.

Today, September 21st, marks the end of Hungry Ghost Month. During the seventh lunar month, it is believed that the gates of the after-world open and spirits return to wander the earth. Families and communities prepare offerings of food, incense, candles, and joss paper (symbolic money and goods) to honour their ancestors and appease wandering souls.

You’ll notice small altars or offerings left outside homes, shops, and on sidewalks. Some communities also host getai performances, with music, Chinese opera, or modern stage shows set up in neighbourhoods as entertainment for both the living and the spirits.

For those of us new to Singapore, it’s a privilege to witness and learn about these traditions that are so deeply woven into local culture. They are a reminder of the ways respect, remembrance, and community are expressed in daily life here.

Choosing a school in Singapore is about far more than matching a curriculum to your passport. At Red Dot Relocation, we look at your family’s long-term plans, your children’s individual learning needs, and the environment where they will truly thrive.

With many years of teaching experience in Singapore’s international schools, I understand the differences between campuses, cultures, and teaching styles that a prospectus alone can’t show you. We’ll help you navigate application timelines, curriculum pathways, and hidden factors that can make or break the right fit.

Here’s how we make your school search seamless:

1️⃣ Expert Education Advising: We assess your family’s goals and your child’s learning profile, then recommend schools with the right culture, curriculum, and community.

2️⃣ Curriculum Insights: From IB to British, American, Australian, French, IPC/IMYC, Bilingual, and more — we guide you through the pros and cons for your child.

3️⃣ Arranged School Tours: See the schools that meet your criteria, in person or virtually, with expert insight during and after your visits.

4️⃣ Seamless Applications: From paperwork to uniforms, we keep everything on track so you can focus on your move.

5️⃣ Inclusive Support Options: Tailored advice for families seeking environments that meet special learning needs.

At Red Dot Relocation, our goal is simple: your child in the right school, your family confident in the choice.
