Little Urban Oasis 城市小绿州

Little Urban Oasis 城市小绿州 Farm to table by Chan Wan Ying @ Little Urban Oasis 城市小绿洲. Food for families is the simple mission. We want to build a little Oasis for ourselves.

To inspire and empower 30% of local families to grow 30% of their food. From the food we eat/grow to the activities we do to strengthen our body and enrich our minds. For food: What started as a simple desire to be self sufficient on own vegetables supply and a little love and passion on farming brings about Little Urban Oasis. A little Oasis for us and you. We strive to share with you what we gro

w and give to our love ones. Say no to chemical/growth hormones to speed up the growing cycle, no to periodic preventive application of pesticide to keep pests at bay. For wellness: Our love for nature, jog and trek brought us to many places, farmlands, mountains and coastal. We love to plan our own routes and go by foot and public transports. Going into uncharted areas, go slow and explore. This is especially true as we aged. Multi days long backpacking trek allows us to build strength and stamina while explore the world in a slow, relaxing manner. All we seen and experienced are best shared across. Let's inspire each other to stay healthy and active and live well through our last moment.

Npark allotment plot : Part 2: crops selection and trellis setup

We have selected our first crops to be cowpeas(dwarf long beans), green beans and ginger.

Reasons: Last week we shared about soil treatment. But we also mentioned that we only amended the first 25cm to 30cm of soil to save cost. Good grade compost is expensive!

Therefore, we have selected our first crops to be soil enhancing crops like legumes and those with shallow roots that expand horizontally and do not need very rich nutrients in soil.

Legumes crops are able to simply said, convert atmospheric nitrogen to nitrate in soil. If you need good crops size/yield, you will still need to fertilise the crops but legumes nitrogen fixing capabilities help to enhance the soil over time. Comment “more info” if you want us to share more on this.

Since it is an open plot and environment may be too harsh for seeds and initial seedlings, we seed our cowpeas and green beans as well as root our ginger offsite before transplanting into plot.

Follow up on previous purple post. Head forming well after being protected from heat and rain by own natural outer leaves. The head is not very big but compact and this is already the best result after trying for years in tropical weather. The outer leaves are ugly as they are subjected to the strong sun. This is totally fine as they will be discarded anyway upon harvest.

Background:
In hot and humid tropical weather, it is challenging to get purple cabbages to wrap. They sprout and grow well but will not wrap and no crown will be formed.

All the leaves will open up like flowers and will be hard once subjected to heat and are not palatable. Almost given up on this till we were gifted a few seedlings from follow gardener. Feeling bad to throw them away, decided to give it another try. After watching some videos online and correlating to the natural behaviour of this plant in cold weather, this is the end result. Not all are successful though. Only 50 % of the plants succeed for this try.

This experience is documented and try again next season.
