Happy World Sleep Day!

We all know that having a good night’s sleep is very important to us. Having a poor one can lead to various problems such as health issues, impairment of our body’s immunity, and can even cause severe depression! I am sure we are all aware that we should sleep well, but some of us do find it difficult to even get a decent one.

Fret not! As we are gearing up towards a restful weekend, here are some tips to sleep better…

1. Reduce caffeine intake during the day (best to stop having them by late afternoon).
2. Avoid taking alcohol before bed.
3. Do not consume large meal nearing bed time.
4. Do practice consistent sleeping and waking-up time.
5. Try not to have irregular or long daytime naps.
6. Take a relaxing warm bath before bed.
7. Clear you mind and relax more in the evening (listen to music, read a book, use aromatherapy, meditation, etc)
8. Optimize your bedroom environment (eliminate external light and noise).
9. Set an ideal room temperature for sleep (around 20 degrees Celsius is best for most people).
10. Rule out any sleep disorder such as insomnia or sleep apnea (talk to your doctor about this).

With these tips, I hope you can get a better night’s sleep and be more well rested. Good night…

A recent news article published by the University of South Florida mentioned that if you have poor sleep, your risk of heart disease can triple! A scary thought, ain't it?

But it is not too late for a change as sleep health can be modified. Once you get our sleep health in check, the risk of heart disease can also be reduced.

Individual aspects of poor sleep can be detrimental to heart health. But if you combine them, the risk of heart disease can increase by as much as 141 percent. That’s the finding of a new study published in the journal Scientific Reports.

Recently, BMEC Sleep Care collaborated with Medical Practitioners Coalition Association of Malaysia (MPCAM) to conduct a webinar for GPs in Malaysia and SE Asia entitled "A Novel Sleep Diagnostic System Simple to Implement into Primary Care Settings". Over 40 GPs attended the webinar.

The speaker was Dr Solveig Magnusdottir, the medical director for SleepImage. The key takeaway for this webinar was how GP can initiate diagnosis for sleep disorders at their own clinic and how easy it is to use the SleepImage system for this purpose.
