Martinovanje in Slovenia 🍷 is one of the most joyful and popular autumn celebrations in the country. It takes place on November 11th, the feast day of St. Martin, and marks the moment when, according to tradition, the grape must (“mošt”) turns into wine.

🍇 Meaning and Origin

The celebration originates from old wine-growing customs. St. Martin of Tours, a 4th-century bishop, is known for his humility and kindness, but in Slovenia, he is especially honored as the patron saint of winemakers and vineyards.
After the grape harvest and fermentation period, people would hold a ceremony to bless the new wine and give thanks for a successful vintage.
